Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Congratulations to biochemistry senior, Kayla Bell, on accepting a job offer at Pharmaceutical International, Incorporated, Pii. Special thanks to chemistry faculty member, Dr. George Lauterbach who helped Kayla apply for the position. Kayla is excited to start at Pii when she graduates later this month!

Congratulations to Dr. Dawn Ward on her promotion to Associate Professor of Chemistry! Dr. Ward’s promotion was based on her teaching of organic chemistry, her service on various committees at SU and her research accomplishments. This exciting news was announced at the 2016 Faculty Recognition Dinner.

Warm congratulations to Mrs. Diane Payne on winning the Rose Dawson Excellence in Teaching Award for 2016! Mrs. Payne was nominated by her students for her dedication to teaching and her students, her high expectations of student work, her availability to always help students with coursework, and her excellence as an advisor of the ACS Club. Kudos to Mrs. Payne on this well-deserved honor!

Faculty and administrators in the School of the Sciences attended the 2016 Capital PKAL Regional Network Conference on Creating Learning Environments: Valuing Diversity, Improving Retention and Promoting Persistence for Students in STEM. Everyone learned new ideas on these topics and brought back great ideas for use at SU. In addition, the networking opportunities at the conference allowed for collaborations between universities in the Baltimore-Washington area. From the Chemistry Department, Dr. Dawn Ward (second from left, front), Dr. Michelle Ivey (second from right) and Dr. Ellen Roskes (left) attended the conference.

Congratulations to biochemistry freshman, Sehlah Butt, who is very proud to have just become a United States citizen! Here’s her story:

I was born in Pakistan and then moved to Saudi Arabia with my parents and little sister. In 2001, my family and I moved to America for a free and great education and opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. Fifteen years later, on April 8th 2016, I became a United States citizen. It was such a memorable day and it is an honor to live in such a diverse and growing nation.
