Chemistry faculty member Dr. Dawn Ward (second from left) participated in a career panel during the opening Faculty In-Service in January. The session was geared toward incorporating career-discovery practices into curriculum at the course level. Dr. Ward developed a one credit junior/senior level course for Chemistry and Biochemistry majors called Career Connections in Chemistry. This course helps students prepare for either in career or graduate pursuits after Stevenson.

Another successful Herbal Medicines and Remedies 2020 Winterim course has finished and the students are headed back to Baltimore. During their time in Ecuador, students learned about the indigenous medicines of the region through various excursions to Botanical Gardens, Ecological Reserves, and indigenous clinics and hospitals. They learned about one of Ecuador’s main exports, chocolate, at the Chicao cocoa farm. In all it was a fabulous trip led by chemistry faculty member Dr. Tim Dwyer. Biochem alum (’19) Nahbila Bassah is celebrating the New Year with acceptance to PA school at Anne Arundel Community College/University of Maryland at Baltimore Collaborative program, in which students complete a Master of Science in Health Science from UMB and a Certificate of Physician Assistant Studies from AACC. Her studies begin in May 2020. Nahbila is originally from Cameroon and has wanted to study medicine since she was very young. Congratulations on your perseverance and success, Nahbila!

The new year is shaping up for biochemistry alum Jasmin Ramirez (BS’17). She was recently accepted into the graduate program in Biotechnology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Classes begin later this month. Congrats, Jasmin!
