The Friday before Spring Break, Chemistry and Biology faculty members (pictured L-R Dr. Dawn Ward; Dr. Lorie Lana (biology); Dr. Michelle Ivey) attended the Capital Project Kaleidoscope regional network conference in Bowie, MD. Dr. Ward presented a poster on “Preparing Chemists in the Digital Age”, and Dr. Lana presented her work on “Integration of an Inquiry-Based Research Project into an Upper Level Immunology Course”. The theme of the conference was “A Call to Action for Diversity and Inclusion in STEM”.

Ian Liyayi (center back) at the University of Georgia as a PREP scholar.
Recent Biochemistry graduate Ian Liyayi (BS’18) is pursuing a doctorate at UVa beginning this summer. Since graduation, Ian has been completing a post baccalaureate research education program as an NIH PREP scholar at the University of Georgia. His research experiences began with an NSF funded REU at the University of Michigan in the summer of 2017. Ian also completed a semester of independent research at Stevenson with Dr. Tracey Mason. Ian has applied to and was accepted to several universities for graduate study. Congratulations Ian!

Chemistry faculty member, Dr. George Lauterbach, is spending Spring Break visiting Tombstone, AZ to see the migrating Sand Hill Cranes. These large cranes winter in southeast Arizona and migrate in huge flocks to the far reaches of northern Canada and into Siberia for breeding. The picture of the mass of birds shows about 2000 of them hanging out near a pond to rest up and begin their long trek. The close-ups show them in some detail. The red part on the head are not feathers but the skin on their head.

Guinness beer, which is great to drink on St. Patrick’s day, also serves as a great lesson in Chemistry. Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the SOS Chemistry Department! We hope everyone is enjoying a great start to Spring Break 2019!
