FAQs

Q: What is housing selection?
A: The housing selection process is the formal procedure to choose your housing assignment for the following academic year. At Stevenson University we allow our returning students to choose which building, floor, suite/apartment, and bedroom they would like to live in (based on space availability and completion of requirements).

Q: Who participates in housing selection?
A: Any student, whether resident or commuter, who is returning to Stevenson University for the following academic year and looking to live on campus is eligible to participate in housing selection.

Q: I’ve never been through housing selection. What do I need to know?
A: The housing selection process starts early February and ends in early April. Information regarding housing selection will become available in late January. It is important to complete all requirements by the designated deadlines. All students are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions to learn the specifics of housing selection. Most importantly, if you have a question about the process or the requirements ask your Resident Assistant, Resident Director or stop by the Residence Life & Housing desk in Ratcliffe.

Q: How many credits do I need to take to keep my spot in housing?
A: All students are required to be registered full-time (12 credit hours per semester) with Stevenson University.

Q: Is housing selection for the entire following academic year?
A: Yes. Students participating in housing selection are expected to live on-campus for the entire academic year unless they are graduating in December, studying abroad during a future semester, or no longer attending Stevenson University.

Q: What if I am graduating in December?
A: Students expecting to graduate in December may go through the housing selection process and live on campus for the fall semester. During the fall semester the resident is expected to inform Residence Life & Housing of their intention to graduate by filling out the Request to Be Released from Housing form towards the end of the semester. Residence Life & Housing will confirm the graduation with the university’s registrar.

Q: If I am returning from a leave/hiatus, where do I fall in the housing selection process?
A: Once readmitted to the university, please contact Residence Life & Housing.

Q: Do I go through housing selection if I am applying to be a Resident Assistant?
A: Yes. All returning Resident Assistants and those applying to be a Resident Assistant are required to complete a housing application on eRezlife. Resident Assistant employment decision letters should be available prior to the deadline for housing selection. If you are not selected to be a Resident Assistant, you will have time to submit your housing deposit before the deadline and complete a roommate group.

Q: What if I can’t fill an entire suite / apartment?
A: Residence Life & Housing provides different opportunities to form complete roommate groups. If you are unable to fill an entire suite/apartment our office will assign your group a suite/apartment based on space availability. We will use roommate profiles in order to fill remaining space.

Q: If I am going through housing selection without a roommate group, or an incomplete roommate group when will I receive my housing assignment?
A: Residents without a complete roommate group will be able to select housing on specific days of selection week or after selection week has occurred. Residence Life reserves the right to assign students as well as needed after housing selection has occurred in any vacancies.

Q: What if I do not go through selection and then need housing?
A: Please contact Residence Life & Housing immediately. We want to ensure your Financial Aid and Student Accounts bill are correct. Students requesting housing after housing selection will be placed in vacancies based on space availability only.

Q: Will I get a better housing selection day/time if I submit all my requirements early?
A: No. In order to be fair for all, group’s housing selection times are determined after the deadline for all requirements. It is highly encouraged that you and everyone in your roommate group submit all requirements early to ensure you receive a housing selection day/time.

Q: Where can I get additional information about the requirements?
A: Residence Life & Housing will host multiple information sessions for students. Attending one or more info sessions is greatly encouraged for all students to familiarize themselves with the housing selection process. During this time Residence Life & Housing staff will walk you through the entire housing selection process and answer your questions.

Q: What if my Emergency Contact information has not changed?
A: No problem. You only need to click confirm to update the status date. If your emergency contact information has changed you can go in and edit and click confirm afterwards.

Q: What is the housing contract and when do I sign it?
A: The housing contract is a legally binding contract between the student and the University for the entire academic year. Students are encouraged to read the document thoroughly before signing and ask Residence Life & Housing any questions they may have. The contract can be found on eRezlife at the end of the housing application. Additionally, the contract can be found on the Residence Life portal under Housing Contract or on the external Living on Campus site under Resources.

Q: Can I cancel my housing contract?
A: If you need to cancel your housing, please submit a request to Residence Life & Housing using the Request to be released from Housing Contract form on the Residence Life portal under Housing Contract. Be aware that submitting a request is not an automatic approval. You will be notified via email once a decision is made.

Q: How do I find roommates?
A: Stevenson University offers multiple ways to meet roommates: 1) Roommate Social; 2) eRezlife Roommate Search feature; 3) Events and Clubs around Campus

Q: How many people can I add to my roommate group?
A: When creating your roommate group, it is first important to determine where you prefer to live. In Western Run, Patapsco, Herring Run, Susquehanna, or Wakefield you can have up to 4 students in your roommate group, including yourself.

Q: How do I remove someone from my roommate group?
A: eRezlife roommate groups can be edited anytime until housing selection has started and a group has selected a room. If you would like to change who is in your roommate group, you can by selecting the group name in eRezlife. This will allow you to take someone out of the group or delete the group entirely.

Q: Can I leave a roommate group?
A: Yes, you can change your roommate group within eRezlife by selecting another group or selecting No Group. You can tell which group you are in by the location of the green dot or the green checkmark.

Q: How does it work if I want to live with someone with a lower- or higher-class year than me?
A: As a returning student you have the option to live with whomever you desire. However, housing areas are restrictive to certain classes. For example, only rising juniors and seniors are eligible for the apartments. If you are a rising junior and want to live with a rising sophomore, you would need to select an upperclass suite.

Q: What if I want to live with an incoming student?
A: All incoming first year students are required to live in the first-year area. If you are requesting to live with an incoming transfer student who has already been accepted and deposited to the university by the returning student housing deposit deadline, please contact Residence Life & Housing.

A: The residence life page offers photos and floor plans of each building. In additional there are photos of each building available on the housing selection website under Building Layouts.

Q: Will my financial aid package be affected by the housing option I select?
A: Students are packaged through Financial Aid based on their residency status with the university. The package is not based on your selected housing option. Specific questions regarding your financial aid package and whether it will fully cover your preferred housing option can be directed to Financial Aid.

Q: I am a rising sophomore where can I live
A: Rising sophomores are eligible to live in any of the three Upperclass suites: Patapsco Hall, Herring Run Hall or Wooded Way Hall.

Q: I am a rising junior where can I live?
A: Rising juniors are eligible to live in the apartments or Upperclass suites. All housing options are based on space availability at a student’s housing selection day/time only, so the apartments are not guaranteed.

Q: I am a rising senior where can I live?
A: Rising seniors are eligible to live in the apartments or Upperclass suites. All housing options are based on space availability at the student’s housing selection day/time only, so the apartments are not guaranteed.

Q: Are gender-inclusive options available?
A: Please contact Residence Life & Housing with questions regarding gender-inclusive housing options.

Q: Based on a disability, I have concerns about where I will live. How do I get a disability related accommodation?
A: All disability-related accommodation questions can be directed to the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS). Students should contact ADS as early as possible to initiate the intake and eligibility process. ADS will contact Residence Life & Housing if an accommodation is approved. Accommodation placement is based on space availability.

Q: I currently have a disability related housing accommodation. What do I need to do to keep it for next year?
A: Housing accommodations must be renewed each academic year. For returning students, the deadline is March 1, 2025. Please be sure to reach out to ADS early during the spring semester to see what paperwork is needed in order to secure the housing accommodation(s) for the upcoming fall semester.

Q: I have a disability related housing accommodation. Will I still be able to live with my friends?
A: Yes. Students with approved housing related accommodations can complete their roommate group on eRezlife. The deadline to do this will be a week before the start of housing selection to ensure that our office can work with you to guarantee accommodations. Students approved for a housing related accommodation after housing selection has started will be placed with their friends based on space availability.

Q: Can I preference a single room?
A: A limited number of singles will be available in Patapsco and Herring Run only. Students will be able to select a single during their housing selection day/time based on vacancies at the time of their selection. Space for singles is limited and not guaranteed.

Q: Is there an opportunity to change rooms after I have been assigned a space?
A: A move is not guaranteed but may be reviewed by the office. Please contact reslifereception@stevenson.edu to discuss your specific situation.

Q: How do I know when my housing selection day/time is?
A: If you have completed all requirements, you will receive an email, to your Stevenson email, in late March with your housing selection day and time. All students who have completed the requirements will receive a selection time regardless of whether they are in a roommate group.

Q: How are the housing selection times assigned?
A: Housing selection day and times are determined based on each student’s class year that our department has on record. Rising seniors will go on the first day of selection week. Rising juniors will go on the third day of selection week and rising sophomores will go on the fifth day of selection week. Those within each class year will be randomly placed into a housing selection time slot by eRezlife. The system will not take into account GPA, credit count, or graduation date when it is assigning selection times on each day.

Q: Who receives a priority selection day/time?
A: No one. Selection times are randomly assigned after the deadline of all requirements to ensure all groups have an equal chance of selecting their preferred housing option.

Q: If my intended roommate (or suite/apartment mate) has a better selection day or time than I do, do I need to contact anyone?
A: No! Each person will receive their own selection day and time. If someone in your group has an earlier selection time, they will be able to select housing for everyone in the group, as long as everyone has accepted the group. Please note that if students are pulled into buildings that they are not eligible or have not completed all requirements, they will be removed from that assignment.

Q: What do I need to do for housing selection?
A: Students will be able to log into eRezlife after their selection day, and time has arrived and select “Select a room for Academic Year…” at the top of the page. Students can then search for available vacancies across campus that they are eligible for. You can then select an available bed and pull your roommate group into the room with you. Videos showcasing this process can be found on the Residence Life portal page under Housing-Returning Students.

Q: What if I can’t do housing selection on my set date/time for selection?
A: Once a student’s housing selection time passes, they are able to go in at any time to select housing until housing selection is closed a few weeks after it opens. Emails will be sent out to notify students of the period of housing selection in March.

Q: How does housing selection work if I am currently abroad but will be returning to housing in the fall?
A: Since our housing selection process is completed electronically on eRezlife students currently abroad can still fulfill all requirements and go through the process. If you have any issues accessing the eRezlife forms, please contact Residence Life & Housing.

Q: How do room assignments work if I am planning on studying abroad in the fall?
A: If you are confirmed to be studying abroad during the fall semester, you will not participate in housing selection. If you are unsure whether you will study abroad you may go through the housing selection process and then submit a request to be released from housing form once confirmed. Please note, we do not hold bed spaces. Your current bed space may be reassigned to another student. If you are returning to housing in the spring semester, please complete the Spring Semester housing application that opens in mid-October.

Q: How do I choose a meal plan?

Living & Learning

Living & Learning communities are a part of our Residential curriculum. It provides an intentional framework to educate students outside of the classroom. Just like there is a curriculum or syllabus in the classroom, our Residential curriculum guides your learning that takes place as a member of our residential community. This curricular approach was created to provide intentional learning opportunities for Stevenson residents. This learning is centered around Residence Life and Housing’s four main learning goals (academic commitment, awareness of self, awareness of others, and community engagement). We utilize several strategies to foster these learning goals.

Mustang Meetups

Intentional conversations are the foundation of our Residential curriculum. Mustang Meetups are one-on-one conversations between a Resident Assistant and a resident. They can occur anywhere on campus and should be around 20 minutes in length. RAs will be given a lesson plan that contains suggested questions to help guide the conversation as well as learning goals that the conversation should be centered around.

Bulletin Boards

Bulletin boards are a great way to communicate our Residential curriculum learning goals in a fun and creative way. RAs will be given a lesson plan with detailed instructions as to which learning goal the bulletin board should be focused on.

Community Builders

Monthly community builders are another way we have RAs build relationships and connections on their floor. These community builders can be a consistent activity or a new activity each month. These are activities that get residents connected to campus more and/or each other.

Roommate Agreements

Roommate agreements are facilitated by every RA in each area. The roommate agreements should happen within the first two weeks of classes and updated whenever a new individual moves in or out of the room. These agreements hold residents accountable and make them discuss certain issues with their roommates.

Get Involved

Leadership

Mustang Movers

Mustang Movers are a group of student volunteers who assist new and transfer students with their move to campus during August move in! Mustang Movers will unload student vehicles and move their belongings into their rooms, help direct traffic, and point new students and their families in the right direction.
