Partnerships that Pay it Forward

The generosity of our donors make it possible for many students to earn a degree from Stevenson University. This includes partnerships we have formed with organizations and corporations as well as individual and family contributions. The qualifications a student must meet to receive the award are worked out with the donor to assure the financial support benefits a desired type of student. Scholarships may have specific criteria or more general.

Incoming students are eligible for an array of scholarships and financial aid opportunities.

CohnReznick Accounting Scholarship: The CohnReznick Accounting Scholarship was established by CohnReznick LLP to provide assistance to academically deserving students in the accounting program with financial need. Recipients are selected by Accounting program faculty.

Geraldine and Sam Dell Scholarship for Character and Excellence in Business: The Geraldine and Sam Dell Scholarship for Character and Excellence in Business was established by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Dell; Mr. Dell is a University Trustee. The award provides assistance to an exceptional senior-year student in the Brown School of Business and Leadership who demonstrates ethical grounding and a work ethic resulting in academic and personal success. Recipients are selected by Brown School of Business and Leadership faculty.

Pugh Award for Excellence in Paralegal Studies: The Pugh Award for Excellence in Paralegal Studies was established through contributions from faculty, staff, and alumni to provide assistance to an outstanding Paralegal Studies student, selected by department faculty. The award is named in honor of Francis X. Pugh, Esq., former faculty member and director of the Paralegal Studies program, responsible for creating the first four-year paralegal program in Maryland. Mr. Pugh also served as a University Trustee.

Gary A. and Joan O. Pyne Endowed Scholarship in Business: The Gary A. and Joan O. Pyne Endowed Scholarship in Business was established by Mr. Gary Pyne, member of the University’s Board of Trustees, and his wife, Joan. The award supports urban youth, preferably from Baltimore City, with financial need and an interest in pursuing a career in business.

SC&H Group Endowed Scholarship: The SC&H Group Endowed Scholarship was established by SC&H Group, LLC to provide assistance to Accounting students with financial need. Recipients are selected by Accounting program faculty.

James M. and Margaret V. Stine Foundation, Inc. Endowed Scholarship in Support of the School of Business: The James M. and Margaret V. Stine Foundation, Inc. Endowed Scholarship in Support of the School of Business was established by Mrs. Margaret V. “Peg” Stine ’51 to provide assistance to students majoring in a discipline within the Brown School of Business and Leadership. Recipients must demonstrate high academic standards and financial need.

The Honorable Robert F. Sweeney Scholarship: The Honorable Robert F. Sweeney Scholarship was established by Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP, Miles & Stockbridge P.C., and Whiteford Taylor & Preston LLP in honor of Judge Sweeney, a former faculty member who also served for 32 years as a University Trustee. The award supports students with demonstrated financial need in the University’s Paralegal Studies program.

Sandra Barkin, RN Memorial Scholarship in Nursing: The Sandra Barkin, RN Memorial Scholarship in Nursing was established by Dr. Gilbert Barkin to honor the memory of his wife and her dedication as a nurse. This award provides support to Nursing students with financial need who exhibit a caring nature and involvement in community service.

Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Endowed Scholarship in Nursing: The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Endowed Scholarship in Nursing was established by Mrs. Sandra R. Berman, member of the University’s Board of Trustees, and her husband, Mr. Malcolm C. Berman, to provide assistance to Nursing students with financial need who exhibit a caring and compassionate character and have a minimum 3.3 GPA. Recipients are selected by Nursing program faculty through a competitive process.

Linda Connolly Fenton Endowed Scholarship in Nursing: The Linda Connolly Fenton Endowed Scholarship in Nursing was established by Charles E. Fenton, Esq. to honor his wife, Linda Connolly Fenton, a dedicated nurse. The award provides assistance to Nursing students with financial need.

Herget Endowed Nursing Scholarship: The Herget Endowed Nursing Scholarship was established by Charles E. “Ted” Herget, Jr., member of the University’s President’s Advisory Council. The award provides assistance to students in the Nursing degree program who express a desire to serve for at least two years as a nurse in a Maryland hospital after graduation. Recipients will have good academic standing, financial need, and a high probability of success in the nursing profession.

Joseph S. Keelty Endowed Nursing Scholarship: The Joseph S. Keelty Endowed Nursing Scholarship was established by Mr. Joseph Keelty, a long-time supporter of the University, to provide assistance to Nursing students with financial need, good academic standing, and a high probability of succeeding in the nursing profession.

Hilda Lee Menning Endowed Scholarship for Nursing: The Hilda Lee Menning Endowed Scholarship for Nursing was established by Miss Carol Lee Menning ’69 and named in memory of her mother to honor her dedication to the nursing profession. The award provides assistance to Nursing students with financial need.

Middendorf Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Nursing: The Middendorf Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Nursing was established by the Middendorf Foundation to provide assistance to Nursing students with financial need in the pre-licensure program.

Donald B. Ratcliffe Endowed Scholarship: The Donald B. Ratcliffe Endowed Scholarship was established by the family of Mr. Ratcliffe to mark his retirement from more than 30 years of service on the University’s Board of Trustees. The award provides assistance to students in good academic standing with financial need, with a preference for Nursing students.

Bertha G. Wegad, RN Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Nursing Students: The Bertha G. Wegad, RN Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Nursing Students was established by Mr. Gilbert Wegad, former faculty member, and named in memory of his wife, to provide assistance to deserving Nursing students.

Dr. Joseph A. Brusini Scholarship for the Sciences: The Dr. Joseph A. Brusini Scholarship for the Sciences was established by Catherine Brusini and named in honor of her brother, a former faculty member in the sciences. This award supports a junior year student with financial need and a 3.25 GPA overall and in their major, which will be in one of the following departments: Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Chemistry, or a major in the Physical Sciences within the Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Recipients are selected by the Dean and Chairs of the School of the Sciences.

The award provides assistance to an exceptional senior-year student in the School of the Sciences who demonstrates ethical grounding and a work ethic resulting in academic and personal success. Recipients are selected by School of the Sciences faculty.

Susan Palmer Slattery, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship: The Susan Palmer Slattery, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship was established by the family of the late Dr. Susan Slattery to honor her memory. Dr. Slattery was a Stevenson faculty member and Chair of the Department of Mathematics. The award provides assistance to a female senior-year student with a major in the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Biological Sciences, or the Department of Chemistry. The recipient is selected by School of the Sciences faculty members based on academic merit and a competitive application process.

Maureen Knerr Byrnes Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education: The Maureen Knerr Byrnes Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education was established by Mr. Kevin Byrnes, member and former Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, and named in honor of his wife. The award provides assistance to students with financial need who are majoring in elementary education, and exhibit leadership and involvement in community service.

M&T Bank Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education: The M&T Bank Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education was established by M&T Bank Corporation to provide assistance to students with financial need in the Elementary Education program.

Helen Fitzgerald Byrnes Endowed Scholarship for Visual Communication Design: The Helen Fitzgerald Byrnes Endowed Scholarship for Visual Communication Design was established by Mr. Kevin Byrnes, member and former Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, and named in memory of his mother. The award provides assistance to students with financial need in the Visual Communication Design program.

Pugatch Family Endowed Scholarship for the School of Design: The Pugatch Family Endowed Scholarship for the School of Design was established by Mr. T. Scott Pugatch, member of the University’s Board of Trustees, as was his father before him, Mr. Melvyn Pugatch. The award provides assistance to a residential junior year student with financial need who is majoring in a discipline within the School of Design, and who has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement.

Franyo-Ehlers Endowed Scholarship for Human Services: The Franyo-Ehlers Endowed Scholarship for Human Services was established by Dr. Georgia A. Franyo-Ehlers, Professor of Human Services, to provide assistance to a junior-year Human Services major based on merit. Dr. Franyo-Ehlers created the Human Services major at the University and served as the Program Coordinator of Human Services for ten years. Recipients are selected by the Chair of the Department of Human Services.

Knapheide Endowed Scholarship for Human Services: The Knapheide Endowed Scholarship for Human Services was established by Dr. Georgia A. Franyo-Ehlers, Professor of Human Services, to provide assistance to a senior-year Human Services major based on merit. Dr. Franyo-Ehlers created the Human Services major at the University and served as the Program Coordinator of Human Services for ten years. Recipients are selected by the Chair of the Department of Human Services.

James E. Roberts Memorial Theatre Fund Award: The James E. Roberts Memorial Theatre Fund Award was established by Louise H. “Chris” Roberts ’73, Program Coordinator and Professor of Theatre, and named in memory of her late husband. This fund provides support to a junior year Theatre major who demonstrates talent, teamwork, and leadership. Recipients are chosen by Theatre department faculty.

Jo-Ellen Turner, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship in English: The Jo-Ellen Turner, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship in English was established by the family of Dr. Jo-Ellen Turner, former English department faculty member, in her honor. The award provides assistance to academically deserving students majoring in English, and with a demonstrated interest in literature and writing through achievements in their course work and participation in extra-curricular activities. Recipients are selected by English department faculty.

Abell Foundation Scholarship: The Abell Foundation Scholarship was established by the Abell Foundation to provide assistance to minority students with financial need.

AEGON USA, Inc. Scholarship: The AEGON USA, Inc. Scholarship was established by AEGON USA, Inc. to provide assistance to students with financial need who exhibit outstanding academic promise and leadership.

George I. Alden Scholarship: The George I. Alden Scholarship was established by the George I. Alden Trust to provide assistance to deserving students.

Peter Harry Joseph Bauer Endowed Scholarship: The Peter Harry Joseph Bauer Endowed Scholarship was established through a bequest from the Estate of Mr. and Mrs. Peter H. J. Bauer to provide assistance to academically deserving students with financial need within the greater Baltimore area.

Bunting Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship: The Bunting Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship was established by the Bunting Family Foundation to provide support to students with financial need.

Henry and Pamela Felton Endowed Scholarship: The Henry and Pamela Felton Endowed Scholarship was established by Pamela Felton in memory of her late husband, Henry Felton IV, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. The award provides assistance to students with financial need, a strong work ethic, a record of academic success, and a drive to make a difference in the community.

France-Merrick Foundation Scholarship: The France-Merrick Foundation Scholarship was established by the France-Merrick Foundation to provide assistance to first-generation college students with financial need, especially minorities and residents of Baltimore City.

The Honorable and Mrs. Francis X. Kelly Endowed Scholarship: The Honorable and Mrs. Francis X. Kelly Endowed Scholarship was established by Frank Kelly, former member of the University’s President’s Advisory Council, and Janet Kelly, former member of the University’s Board of Trustees. The award provides support to first-generation college students with academic achievement.

Kimberly Serio Memorial Scholarship: The Kimberly Serio Memorial Scholarship was established by Mrs. Jane Heisey Serio ’79 and named in memory of her daughter. The award provides assistance to incoming freshman students with financial need.

Sheila A. Walsh ’92 ’03M Endowed Scholarship: The Sheila A. Walsh ’92 ’03M Endowed Scholarship was established by an anonymous donor to honor Sheila A. Walsh, alumna of the class of 1992 who returned to earn a master’s degree in 2003. This award supports non-traditional students with financial need who are committed to acquiring a degree in order to advance their career. Recipients should also be dedicated to educational pursuits and committed to making a positive difference in the world, with a preference for students willing to volunteer with the Dyslexia Tutoring Program of Baltimore or other volunteer program which supports literacy.
