The American Chemical Society (ACS) student club is making liquid nitrogen in the MAC today in celebration of National Chemistry Week (NCW) 2025. This is a culmination of a week of events, including a mole scavenger hunt and a scented slime making activity. This week happens every fall, and is designed to “promote the value of chemistry in everyday life”. For more information about National Chemistry Week, visit the ACS page.
Malik Naanaa is a Chemistry and Master of Forensic Science Graduate of Stevenson. He has also been teaching as an instructor in the Forensic Science Master’s program for five years. Malik’s full time job is as a Forensic Chemist II of the Seized Drug Unit at Anne Arundel County’s Crime lab. He was recently recognized as the Forensic Services Employee of the Quarter. Kudos, Professor Naanaa!
“Malik successfully passed the American Board of Criminalistics Seized Drug Analysis Exam. He is always willing to assist other colleagues and lend his advanced chemistry knowledge to anyone in need. Additionally, he routinely teaches an evidence packaging course for new police officers. Malik always ensures the laboratory is clean, tasks are completed, and everyone is included in fun, team-building events. This past year, Malik helped facilitate group workouts alongside the department’s Wellness Officer, which strengthened both the mental and physical health of the entire Forensic Services team. Malik is a true asset to Forensic Services, the Anne Arundel Police Department, and our community.”
Former students Matt Seidenman and Ryan Drazenovic hosted the Analytical Chemistry class at PompeianVisiting the QA/QC LabConducting an olive oil tasting with the blending manager, Nick
The students in Chem 310, Analytical Chemistry, visited the Pompeian Olive Oil company on Friday September 26th. The students and faculty in attendance received a tour of the bottling factory, the quality assurance laboratory and a tasting session. Students are learning about quality assurance methods in the course, and were able to see them in practice in the laboratory. Pompeian was named a USA Today Top Workplace for the past three years, among other accolades, which makes it a great place to work . Our hosts for the visit were former SU chemistry students Ryan and Matt, who have been working in the laboratory at Pompeian for several years.
