Each year the Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society honors students from our local colleges and universities. This year’s Stevenson recipient is Kait Beardsley. She was recognized at the SOS awards ceremony, but was presented her award at the Maryland Section Student Awards Ceremony on Sunday April 11, 2021. Friends, family and department members were able to join the virtual ceremony to celebrate with Kait. Congrats, Kait on your award, and thank you for your dedication to chemistry!

Biochemistry senior Julia Troost is the Founder and President of R.E.A.C.H., a service club that volunteers at local shelters and fundraises to host events to give back to the community. REACH, which incorporates the values of Restoration, Experience, Acceptance, Community and Humility, is a club for anyone who is passionate, genuine and determined to make a difference in the world, providing members with opportunities to be hands-on with various organizations in the community. Some of their activities have included stuffing fuzzy socks with personal care items and delivering to a women’s shelter, writing uplifting holiday cards for the homeless and delivering lunches to Baltimore street people. Julia’s leadership of club R.E.A.C.H was recognized with student leadership awards of “Service Program of the Year” and “Best New Club.” She was also nominated as the “Club President of the Year.”

The last fundraising event for the year, in conjunction with Student Activities is a Basket Auction to benefit My Sister’s Place, a day shelter in Baltimore City for women and children experiencing homelessness. Details on how to bid can be found on the above flyer. The baskets will are on display in Rockland A from 10 am to 6 pm on Monday and Tuesday April 27 and 28, with the drawing for winners on the 28th at 8pm. Tomorrow marks our second annual SU Day of Giving to support what you love at Stevenson. Those of us in Chemistry, well, we love Science! For more information, click here.

The Society Committee on Education (SOCED) selects ACS Student Chapters to receive special recognition on the basis of their programs and activities, as described in their chapter reports. Awards are classified as outstanding, commendable, and honorable mention. The Stevenson Chapter of the ACS has consistently won awards as a student club, and has been voted best club on campus for several years! Congratulations to the ACS Stevenson chapter for a job well done!
