Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Incoming class of 2021 freshmen are converging on campus this June for Mustang Days to complete orientation to Stevenson University. Students will learn how to register for classes and complete their Fall 2017 semester class schedule, as well as meet their Student Success Coach who will work with them their entire first year at Stevenson. Freshmen also take placement tests, meet faculty in their major, learn about campus resources, obtain their Stevenson student ID and meet fellow incoming students. The Fine School of the Sciences Summer Science Camp is happening now! Rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders participate in hands-on activities in robotics, biochemistry, environmental science, anatomy, astronomy and physics all week long. Activities culminate on Friday with a science scavenger hunt, water rockets, the ping pong fountain and more. If you missed out this summer, be sure to like and follow the SOS Facebook page to receive a reminder when registration opens for next summer!

Biochemistry major Angelica Lackey is spending her summer internship with the Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatric Neurology, in the Ketogenic Diet Center. She was able to visit the helicopter pad at the hospital on her second day and was competent in taking patient histories by her third day. Angelica dreams of becoming a physician, and this internship is helping her to strongly confirm this and is bringing her “…one step closer to becoming a doctor!”

Dr. Tracey Mason participated in a 5th grade career day fair at Gunpowder Elementary in Baltimore County. She answered students’ questions about her career as a Professor of Chemistry. Students were curious to know which subjects they are taking in school would help with this career. They guessed science and math were important, but were surprised to learn how important writing and communication were in science.

Several summer courses are being taught in the School of the Sciences in chemistry, biology and math. The courses run from June 5 until July 30 which still gives students a bit of a break before returning in the fall. General Chemistry I and II are being offered, and meet Monday through Thursday for lecture and have two three-hour lab periods per week. The new Manning Academic Center provides the ample classroom and laboratory space to allow for summer classes to run in parallel with other summer programs like Science Camp and Project Lead the Way. Taking summer classes at Stevenson, either in person or online, is a great way for students to get ahead or stay on track in their major and pay their tuition by the credit hour. An added bonus is summer courses often have a class size even smaller than our normal small class size. Pictured is Dr. Ward teaching General Chemistry II.
