Biochemistry Junior, Ginell McLean, was selected to participate in the 2015 Minority Undergraduate Student Internship Program (MUSIP) at the Edgewood Chemical Biogical Center. This summer, Ginell will work with a mentor to conduct science and engineering research. She will present the results of her research during the last week of the program. Ginell will also present her research results to the SU community since she is using this research experience as part of her Capstone Research course.

Dr. Michelle Ivey was awarded an SU Faculty Development Research Grant at the recent Faculty Recognition Dinner. Dr. Ivey plans to use the award to continue her ongoing project- writing a book, with co-author Jason Sonnenberg, on integrating computational chemistry into an undergraduate curriculum. Dr. Ivey presented her ideas and some of the experiments at the ACS meeting in Denver in March. During the course of this project, Dr. Ivey has included students in testing the experiments and improving them.

Chemistry junior, Domique Williams, shared his experience this semester in Integrative Lab in Biochemistry taught by Dr. Tim Dwyer. This course introduced Dom to working independently in the lab setting. Dom reported that he is so much more confident in the lab setting as a result of this course! He truly enjoys all aspects of working in a lab- planning, preparing, completing experiments, and interpreting and communicating results. He plans to use his skills, excitement, and confidence when he participates in his senior Capstone experience during the summer.

SU set a new Guinness Book world record by holding the largest exercise ball class- close to 400 participants! The event raised almost $2400 which is being split between two charities- the Wounded Warrior Project and Wishes for Warriors. Students, faculty and staff from the School of the Sciences participated and had a good time.

Congratulations to Biochemisty freshman, Morgan McCluskey Wirtz (left in top picture), and Biochemistry junior, Alicia Greene (right in top picture), on their excellent playing which contributed to the Women’s Golf Team winning the Middle Atlantic Conference Golf Championship! They are headed to Florida for the NCAA championship! Good luck Morgan and Alicia- we’re all really excited for you!
