Students in Dr. Tracey Mason’s Instrumental Analysis course served as judges for 4^th and 5^th grade science fair projects at Gunpowder Elementary in Baltimore County. The elementary school students were excited to share their projects, and our SU science majors were happy to share in that excitement!

Students, faculty and staff celebrated Earth Day at the 2015 Greenfest! There were tables and exhibits about green chemistry (by the ACS student group), buidling Reefballs to protect the Chesapeake Bay, animal protection, beekeeping, and many others. A good time was had by all and everyone learned a lot!

At the April ACS Meeting, Lynnda Watson, Forensics Supervisor at the Baltimore County Police Department, described a career as a Forensic Scientist. She showed the various instruments used in a crime lab as well as the data obtained from these instruments. She encouraged those interested in a career in Forensic Science to obtain a strong undergraduate background in science and then to continue with graduate work in Forensic Science. In the course of her talk, she mentioned Stevenson’s Forensic Science Master’s Program.

Congratulations to Chemistry Senior Stephen Dennis on receiving the American Chemical Society Maryland (ACS) Section Student Award from Stevenson University. Stephen was honored at the 2015 ACS Student Awards Luncheon this weekend. He was recognized for his overall academic excellence in upper-level chemistry courses and laboratory experiences and his contributions to departmental activities and projects.

Julia Wikoff Barker, BS Chemistry 2010, MS Forensic Sciences 2011, came for her annual visit to SU to speak in FSCI 101, Survey of Forensic Sciences. Julia, a Federal Government Document Examiner, shared her expertise in questioned documents. Students always enjoy learning from Julia’s presentation and hearing her story on how she has been successful in the forensics community.
