Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Juniors Makik Naanaa, Robert Chen and Ryan Drazenovic (left to right) each completed a research project in the fall on a project related to the Hepatitis C Virus. Malik and Robert worked with Dr. Dawn Ward on the synthesis inhibitors of the virus using organic chemistry laboratory techniques. Ryan worked with Dr. Jason Sonnenberg on using computational molecular modeling to determine which compounds work best at bonding metals that may lead to the inhibition of the virus. They all presented their research at the School of the Sciences Poster Session in December.

Biochemistry senior Kathryn Merrick completed an Honors Capstone internship at Medstar NRH Rehabilitation Network in Bel Air, working with Heather Kohlbus, the Head Athletic Trainer for the Baltimore Blast. In addition to all that she learned at the Rehabilitation Center, Kathryn also wrote her honors paper on the assessment of concussions. Kathryn looks forward to applying all that she learned through her Capstone internship when she starts graduate school in Physical Therapy at the University of Maryland in fall 2015 She is shown here with Dr. Ellen Roskes, department chair.

Congratulations to SU Alum Jennifer Robinson (BS Chem 2012, MS Forensic Sciences 2014) on her new position as a Medical Examiner at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Boston. We’re really excited for you!

Senior Josh Johnson worked at Giant Pharmacy for his capstone internship. Josh really enjoyed interning there and learning how to fill prescriptions, make phone calls to patients and operate the robot Giant uses to count pills. Josh is shown here at the School of the Sciences Poster Session discussing his work on whether over-the-counter drugs with the potential for abuse should be better monitored.

Warmest congratulations to Mercedes Vilasoa on her graduation with a BS in Chemistry in December and on her winning the Orsia R. Young Leadership Graduation Award. Mercedes was given this award because of her leadership in the Environmental Club over three years, her excellent academic record, and her offers to volunteer for any School of the Sciences event or program.
