Michelle Dennis was accepted into The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) for the SURF program. During this program, Dennis will have the opportunity to become comfortable in a laboratory setting, increase her research skills, learn to think critically about the theory and application of interdisciplinary biomedical research, and increase her proficiency in communicating scientific concepts. This internship will take place from from June 4 through August 10.
TSRI is the one of the largest private, not-for-profit biomedical research institution with an international reputation in biology, chemistry, immunology, biophysics, cell biology, and neuroscience. In addition, TSRI has created a number of dynamic and stimulating educational programs. The SURF Program was created to expose talented undergraduates from diverse backgrounds to our state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary research programs and outstanding faculty, and prepare them for career opportunities in biomedical research. Every intern will be assigned to conduct research in a cutting-edge laboratory for ten weeks and directly mentored by scientists. Participants will attend weekly professional development workshops and scientific seminars that cover a wide array of topics, including cutting-edge research currently being studied at the institution, time management, career options with a PhD, and ‘life as a grad student’ presentations. At the end of the summer, participants give oral and/or poster presentations of their research at the campus-wide Summer Intern Symposium.
