Dr. Mills at the National Honors Investiture Ceremony.

The Psychology Department is pleased to announce that our very own Dr. Pamula Mills was awarded the esteemed Order of Distinction (Companion) for her humanitarian efforts for the Government of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas! This is one of the highest civilian awards, dedicated to recognize exemplary service to society.

About Dr. Mills

Dr. Pamula Mills, a Clinical Psychologist, is well-known among the Psychology Department for teaching classes like Human Growth and Development and Psychopathology. She has always been the type of person others would gravitate to for counseling or advice, and takes pride in the humanitarian services she’s been involved in throughout her career. She finds it was her calling to help others, and has dedicated her life being involved and promoting her community. It is for these reasons and more that she was awarded.

The Order of Distinction (Companion)

Dr. Mills has received several awards for her charitable work, but her most recent nomination is the highest honor yet. On the same level of the Presidential Medal of Freedom–the highest civilian award of the United States–Dr. Mills was awarded the Order of Distinction (Companion). She also takes pride that her father was posthumously awarded the Distinguish Service Medal. Among her many involvements in the past 30 years, she founded the Professional Association and Restoration Team, a Bahamian crisis team, which provided counseling and psychological first aid services during hurricanes Francis, Jeanne, Wilma and Dorian. In addition, during the COVID pandemic, she organized activities for the residents of Bimimi via zoom, as they were entirely locked down for two weeks. These activities, which involved devotions, food preparation, exercise routines, workshops, and more, fostered community and bondings during a time of isolation. These are just a couple of her many involvements that contributed to her noble nomination of the award.
