Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty (L-R) Professors Dawn Ward, Corinna Carter, Michelle Ivey and Matt Hudson were all smiles at the end of the year celebration for all faculty and staff of Stevenson Univeristy. We are all grateful for another successful year, for a relaxing summer and for matching T-shirts!
The Chemistry and Biochemistry hosted it’s own low-pressure poster session for our spring independent research students. They worked hard all semester and were eager to share the data that they collected. Through independent research and presentation, students not only refine their scientific communication skills but also recieve a supportive network that nurtures their growth as researchers and scholars.
This year’s Spring Spectacular was extra spectacular as it included the viewing of a partial solar eclipse. While we were sad to not be able to witness totality, we had plenty of demonstrations, crafts, games and treats to make us happy! Chemistry and Biochemistry Students (top to bottom) Tamar Singman, Marisa Sloan, Mackenzie Redding and Tabytha McLaughlin, together with research mentors Profs Will Harrel and Matt Hudson, presented their work at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans. The students were really excited for this opportunity and to see the scope of a national conference. After their presentations they were able to take in some of the sights in the city, including beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe Du Monde.
Biochemistry Senior Bailey Krahl has been completing her internship with Stevenson’s Laboratory Services. She says that the job always keeps her busy and constantly on the move. She enjoys the interactions and relationships she has with different people around campus while fullfilling her duties. Bailey had this to say about her internship experience: ” I would definitely stick with this side of the lab. I like doing the background working and being in multiple labs instead of staying in the same place. I like having the ability to still work hands on with chemicals but need to know the dangers of them and how to handle. This internship requires good organizations skills which I have and definitely want to apply to a job I have in the future. I love having the ability to handle many tasks and be on top of organizing them so all get done on time. ”
