Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Chemistry and forensic science alum (’10/’11) Marisa Bender was honored with the Stevenson Young Alumni award. Marisa was unable to attend the Baccalaureate Ceremony to receive her award, but she and her dad visited campus later this summer to meet with President Hirshman. Here she is pictured with her award on the Dell Pathway in early August.

The faculty and staff of the Chemistry department are happy to welcome all the Mustangs back to campus! We hope you have a fun and successful semester!

This summer, Biochemistry senior, Shelbie Baird, participated in an REU, an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates, at Virginia Commonwealth University. Shelbie had an amazing summer. She is shown here at the final poster session. According to VCU: “Final poster session of the 2019 REU cohort: We had a great discussion of interdisciplinary projects conducted by a highly motivated group of undergraduate students!!!”

This summer, Biochemistry major Laura Gerrick was the Stevenson student chosen to participate in the Nathan Schaper Summer Intern Program. This program is a 10 week summer internship doing cancer research at the University of Maryland. Laura worked under the direction of Dr. Alexander Drohat studying DNA mismatch repair. She presented the results of her summer work at the end of summer research symposium. Several successful Biochemistry alumni got their start in this same internship program!
