Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Alumni Ryan Drazenovic (Chemistry ’16/MSFS’17) was recently hired as an Assistant Toxicologist at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Maryland. Since graduation, Ryan has also been teaching general chemistry lab and will continue to teach in the evenings at Stevenson. Congratulations, Ryan!

December 2016 biochemistry graduate Dzov Singman is headed to Brooklyn this fall. She was accepted to the MD/Ph.D. program at the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. She has worked hard to get there and the entire department wishes her the best! Congratulations, Dzov!

Chemistry faculty member Dr. Dawn Ward traveled to Washington, DC last week to attend the TIDES conference, Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM, presented by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU). Dr. Ward served as a Capital Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL (AAC&U ) representative at the TIDES Institute. Participants discussed outcomes of projects they developed through funding from the program. The goal of this institute was for TIDES and PKAL affiliates to discuss goals for future dissemination of information and sharing of CRT (culturally relevant teaching) resources, as well as continued networking within the organizations.

Chemistry faculty member Dr. Tracey Mason traveled to Newport, RI in June to participate in the Gordon Research Conference: Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Oligonucleotides. She was invited to serve on a career mentoring panel to share her experiences with teaching at a primarily undergraduate institution. Graduate students in the field asked about how to be a competitive applicant for faculty positions and what the research component is like with undergraduates. Dr. Mason is pictured with the conference chairwoman, Dr. Mindy Graham, a post-doctoral researcher at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Due to close-knit interactions in the chemistry department and at Stevenson, our alumni become life-long friends. Chris Toth, Biochem ’16 (right in picture), and Megan Donahue, Business Comm ’16 (next to Chris in picture), took a trip to North Carolina to visit Alicia Greene, Biochem ’16 (holding dog in picture), and Dan Ebsworth, Accounting ’16. Chris is starting in the Physician Assistant Graduate Program at the University of Toledo in August. Alicia just finished her first year at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. We love getting updates on our alumni!
