The department of Business Communication welcomed benefactor and friend Ronald M. Shapiro on Tuesday, Nov. 14, to give the 10th annual Shapiro/Rouse lecture. In a conversation with the audience, Shapiro spoke about the coincidences and twists life can take, urging students to be ready for those surprising or unexpected happenstances. Using his own life story as illustration, Shapiro explained that predicting the path one’s career will take is often next to impossible.

Shapiro, an expert negotiator and sports agent, as well as an attorney and best-selling author, along with his wife Kathryn, endowed the lecture series a decade ago in honor of associate professor Chip Rouse, who shares the lecture’s name with the Shapiros. Through the years, the lecture has hosted those in the Maryland-area business world including Kevin Byrne, senior vice president of the Baltimore Ravens; and Steve Battista, senior vice president of Under Armour’s creative division, among others.
