The Department of Mathematics and Physics is very excited to start the 2016-2017 year! We’re excited to be in our new building with new rooms just for our department. The start of a new academic year always brings wonderful energy and excitement to campus. It also gives us a fresh start with new programs, ideas, and plans.
WELCOME to our new freshmen and transfer students and WELCOME BACK to our returning students. We hope you’re as excited about the upcoming semester as we are!
Students and faculty who participated in S3RP, our summer research program, had an amazing summer! They all learned a lot, advanced many research projects and really enjoyed themselves! Here is our official 2016 S3RP Picture.
Dr. Benjamin Wilson was accepted as a Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) fellow this year. Project NExT is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. The program officially began at MathFest in Columbus, Ohio where Dr. Wilson participated in a week of professional development activities.
Each summer, students engage in research with faculty in our Summer Science Scholars Research Program (S3RP). At the end of the summer, students present their research results to students, faculty and staff from the School of the Sciences. Math junior, Gerald Roman did a great job with his research and his presentation on the Mathematical Analysis of Natural and Constructed Languages. He is shown here with his mentor, Dr. Benjamin Wilson.
Students and faculty participating in the Summer Science Scholars Research Program attended the Orioles game against the Rockies. The Orioles won 3-2 in extra innings. In addition, we created our own excitement- the Baltimore Metro stopped working, stranding a couple of people (but they were picked up by others in the group) and Math Faculty Member Dr. Ben Wilson was seen at this Orioles game on a TV as far away as Ocean City, Maryland. A great time was had by all!
