Dr. Byron Henry joins the BSOBL faculty this fall as an Associate Professor in Accounting. Prior to his current appointment, he was an Associate Professor and the Acting Chair in the Department of Accounting in the School of Business at Howard University. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Bowie State University (2009-2016), Howard University (1997-2009) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont (1996-1997). He has published articles in the areas of state and local taxation and accounting education and presented numerous papers on a wide array of accounting topics. His research interests include accounting and reporting issues affecting nonprofit organizations as well as the ethical practices and perceptions of accountants.

Byron has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in accounting through both face-to-face and online delivery systems. He strongly believes that learning is best achieved by doing and emphasizes problem-based learning in his courses to strengthen the development of critical thinking skills among his students.

Byron holds degrees in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin, George Washington University and Texas A&M University. He is licensed to practice as a certified public accountant (CPA) in Texas and Maryland. He held professional positions with Ernst & Whinney, the Texas State Comptroller of Public Accounts and the Texas State Auditor’s Office and has professional and community affiliations with the Texas and Maryland Societies of CPAs, the American Accounting Association, and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). Byron currently serves on the Trustee Board of the First Baptist Church of Guilford (Columbia, MD) and officiates high school football in the local area.
