The Counseling & Human Services and Psychology programs are distinct but related majors within Stevenson’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Consider the Counseling and Human Services major. The program prepares you to understand individuals, families, and communities; provide professional services; develop policies; and advocate for the support they need to transform their lives and thrive. In addition to course work, students learn through real-world internship and practicum experiences.

Consider the Psychology major. The program not only offers a thorough scientific exploration of human behavior, cognition, and emotions but also provides hands-on experiences through field placements and internships. Whether you are drawn to clinical practice or research, you develop the skills to make a positive impact on individuals and communities and improve the lives of others.

Real-World ImpactLearn how to make a direct impact in people’s lives through social work, advocacy, policy development, and community outreach.Explore the scientific study of human thought, behavior, and emotion, and learn to apply this understanding in a variety of contexts.
Experiential Learning In and Out of the ClassroomExperiential training—including internships, service-learning projects, and fieldwork—prepares students to step into meaningful roles immediately after graduation.

Total Hours: 450 (Two classes: Internship and Practicum)
Through access to research labs and opportunities to assist faculty with research, students develop their data analysis and critical thinking skills. Students participate in mental health internships in a variety of settings—including school, medical, business, sports, and forensic settings.

Total Hours: 120 required internship hours (additional hours are optional)
