After six years as an armed guard at a nuclear power plant, David Jacobs knew that he needed a change.

Choosing to enroll in Stevenson University Online’s Master’s in Healthcare Management program felt like a big step, as David says, “When I first started this journey with Stevenson two years ago, I knew close to nothing about healthcare, let alone managing an organization.”

His decision paid off, as David graduates from the program in December ‘21 with a full-time job as Practice Manager with a medical clinic. David’s role includes:

  • providing leadership

  • scheduling of the staff

  • participate in hiring and training staff

  • working with the physicians on a daily basis

  • monitoring and controlling costs

  • overseeing staff productivity

David attributes his success in the Healthcare Management program to a number of factors, including case studies, an internship, and discussions around leadership theories and their application to real-life scenarios. He especially felt supported by faculty in the program, stating,

The teachers at Stevenson University are incomparable when it comes to the passion and knowledge they bring to the students. My professors always made sure to make time for me, whether it was to review an assignment and further break it down for me to understand my mistakes, or returning emails in a timely fashion.

In fact, David’s biggest piece of advice for adult students adjusting to an online learning environment is to stay in consistent contact with your professors. He notes that Stevenson’s faculty want their students to succeed and will help provide support and guidance throughout the course.

David acknowledges that it can be difficult to balance schoolwork, a full-time job, other responsibilities, and a social life. However, he has no regrets about his decision to complete an online master’s degree program. David’s advice to someone considering pursuing an online degree is,

DO IT!!! You will not regret your decision. The best investment you can make is in yourself and to be able to complete classes on your own time is a beautiful thing.
