When I began my internship with Concordia Properties, I arrived with the mindset of learning as much as I could during my time here. Learning in a classroom environment is very different from learning on the job in-person.
Concordia Properties in Pikesville, MD is a large company that manages several apartment complexes across the country, and I had the pleasure of working at Milbrook Apartments. Under this position, I was responsible for marketing company specials, calling prospective tenants, scheduling tour appointments, running credit and background checks, and preparing the final paperwork for new tenants.
This internship truly strengthened my social and communication skills. Classroom settings teach students about acting in an ethical and civil manner when dealing with clients. The downside of classes is that professors teach based on theory; such as making eye contact, firm handshakes, speaking in a polite manner, etc.
Internships such as the one I took part in for example, allows people to deal directly with others face-to-face. There are many books that have been written about sales and how to market yourself when you are trying to sell something. In my case, this internship helped me learn the type of salesperson I am and in what areas I could improve on. With what I have learned from this internship, I can confidently say that I am better prepared for the real estate industry. This experience allowed me to strengthen my social
skills and how to handle difficult situations, which is important to know in this industry.
Leasing in general allows an insight into the residential side of the industry and how to deal
with people on a day-to-day basis. Concordia Properties is a good company to have had an internship experience with and their teachings will help in my future career.
