Junior Elementary Education majors, Lauren Banks and Joy Lee, presented their honors project at the Spring 2024 Scholars Symposium entitled, “Strengths Spotting: An Exploration of Elementary Students’ Mindsets about Learning Mathematics.” With the assistance of Dr. Kobett in her math methods course, the project explored the impact of strengths-based activities in second and fourth grade classrooms to determine if they promote positive math identities. Joy remarked, “We enjoyed watching our students gain natural curiosity in lessons when their strengths were recognized and appreciated. We can’t wait to use more of this framework in our future classroom.”
