Claire Witt (’24), Early Childhood Education major, was chosen to be the student speaker at the December Graduation Celebration on December 5, 2024.

Claire’s address spoke of times of struggles, doubts, and fears that sometimes arose during the college education experience, but emphasized how the graduates found strength to overcome those struggles. Like Claire, many graduates completed high school during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many also relocated to live away from home for the first time, and that change in environment brought independence, a new culture, and a sense of community. She felt Stevenson allowed her to take risks and make mistakes to learn and grow. Her advice to the graduates was to trust and believe in themselves, and follow their own unique path.
Claire formed many meaningful connections during her time at Stevenson. She took a moment to thank her advisor and Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Beth Kobett. Dr. Kobett’s support lifted her up, reminded her of her capabilities, and helped her believe in herself. As she faced adversity, she learned that pausing to breath as you climb a mountain is not a sign of failure but an opportunity to rise higher. Looking back, she is able to see the purpose in each obstacle she encountered. She extolled the graduates to be proud of their resilience and to trust their ability and believe in their purpose.
The School of Education is proud of Claire’s achievements and her special honor to be selected as student speaker at this momentous occasion.
