This week Dr. Norris’ forest ecology lab is learning to tell history with trees. Dendrochronological examination of some of the stumps on OMN campus found that the trees weren’t as old as expected, were fast growers, likely planted when site was developed in early 1970’s. Stumps on forest edge grew slowly until early 70’s, then released presumably due to adjacent clearing for parking lot. The students also took some tree core samples as well.
