The Department of Mathematics and Physics congratulated seniors graduating with a degree in Applied Mathematics this year with a celebration including gifts and the presentation of the Annual MATHY Awards. This year’s MATHY’s included an award for “Best Geometry Proofs”, the “Turn in Perfect Work… Late” award, and the “Get Out of my Math Learning Collaboratory” award.

Stevenson Applied Mathematics major Brittney Johnson presented her research at the Spring 2023 Meeting of the MD-DC-VA section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) at Virginia State University. Her poster was titled “Can Shakespeare Guess Today’s Wordle?”. Brittney won first place in the undergraduate poster session competition! The work was based on research she completed with Associate Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Benjamin Wilson, and Applied Math majors Julian Cha and Chris Villanueva. Congratulations Brittney!

Students, Brittney Johnson (Applied Math) and Becky Go (Applied Math/BME) and Dr. Ben Wilson (Associate Professor of Mathematics) attended the Spring 2023 Meeting of the MD-DC-VA section of the Mathematical Association of America at Virginia State University. The meeting featured three plenary addresses, several contributed paper sessions, an undergraduate poster session, and several activities for undergraduates including a math Jeopardy game. Dr. Wilson gave a talk titled “A Partial Mastery Grading Approach for Calculus”. Brittney presented a poster titled “Can Shakespeare Guess Today’s Wordle?” and won first place in the undergraduate poster session competition!

The 7th Annual Spring Spectacular was a major success with more activities than ever. Students and faculty enjoyed liquid nitrogen ice cream, fresh popped popcorn, and fun math and science games and activities like the Towers of Hanoi, Monty Hall with Jelly Beans, Chaos Game demonstration, Buffon’s Pixy Stix, Minimal Surfaces with Bubbles, the Prisoner’s Dilemma, and more! New this year we added a live glass blowing demonstration. We can’t wait for next year!

Luna Huynh (Applied Mathematics/Chemistry ’23) presented her research at the Spring 2023 Regional Undergraduate Math Research Conference at Towson University. Her talk was titled “Using Optimal Transport Theory to Optimize Decision Making on How Sleep Quality and Activity Influence the Outcome of Pregnancy”.
