Three faculty members from Stevenson University’s Department of Mathematics attended MathFest in Indianapolis, an annual conference hosted by the Mathematical Association of America. The event brings together mathematicians from across the country to share research, teaching innovations, and outreach efforts.

Dr. Ben Wilson presented a poster in a session on outreach, highlighting Stevenson’s involvement in the Maryland STEM Festival each fall. His poster showcased the Mathstravaganza, an engaging annual event where students and faculty collaborate to promote excitement for mathematics through hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations.

Dr. Mark Branson and Mr. Sean Leavy gave a talk on a new course structure for Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning. Their presentation focused on the pilot implementation of this structure, which incorporates Math for the People, a textbook co-authored by Dr. Branson.

The Department of Math and Physics held the Annual MATHY Awards celebrating graduating seniors Jay Whitmon and Chris Villanueva. Congrats to our seniors! We can’t wait to see you graduate.

Math faculty attended the Spring 2024 Meeting of the MD-DC-VA section of the MAA at James Madison University. The conference featured a workshop on Promoting community, confidence, and creativity in the classroom, three invited talks, and a variety of contributed talks by both students and faculty from around Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Professor Amy Tucker presented a talk titled Utilizing a Mastery-Based Grading Method in a Foundational Math Class about the alternative grading practices she has implemented in MATH 005#, Foundations of Quantitative Reasoning.

Capstone students in the School of the Sciences presented posters about their capstone research and internship experiences. All students in the School of the Sciences complete a capstone experience in their senior year.
