Math alum, Guiliana Datnoff, who graduated in December, and Math faculty member, Dr. Ben Wilson, presented their research at the Paul D. Lack Scholars’ Showcase at SU. The work they presented was based on the research that Guiliana did as her Senior Internship. They studied student perspectives on recommendations for improving high school mathematics.

The SU chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) held its inaugural officers meeting today. Shown from left to right around the table are Vice President-Guiliana Datnoff, President-Luna Huynh, Secretary-Ashlyn Bray, and Treasurer- Bisma Mahmood. They were joined by faculty advisors Amy Tucker and Dr. Sarah Blanset (virtually). We are looking forward to the events they are planning to bring to the SOS!

Dr. Mark Branson was asked how COVID has changed how he teaches/interacts with students?

“One of the good things about COVID is the flexibility it’s given us in how we interact with students. With virtual office hours, it’s much easier for students to come and ask me a question – rather than having to walk all the way across campus, they can just log in and ask. Several of my students use office hours now to work on their homework, and when they get stuck or confused, sign in and ask me immediately. I also have a lot of students who use course recordings to catch up or review topics that they’re struggling with. Even when we’re back face-to-face, I’m looking forward to using these tools to help support my students.”

Congratulations to senior Sarah Riggin on receiving the Susan Palmer Slattery, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is endowed in honor of the former Math Department Chair, Dr. Susan Palmer Slattery. Sarah is a double major in Applied Mathematics and Chemistry, as well as a collegiate athlete on the Stevenson University Women’s Volleyball Team. Sarah has served as a PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) leader, helping students understand their coursework. Sarah has also participated in many research opportunities throughout her time at Stevenson through the Summer Science Scholar Research Program, as well as participating in a competitive research position at West Virginia University. Sarah plans to pursue an advanced degree combining her interests in mathematics and chemistry. Congratulations, Sarah!
