Dina Fiasconaro is a Baltimore screenwriter and director. Her early work was influenced by her immigrant family’s stories, and her current projects continue to center female characters and explore the thematic threads of psychology, gender roles and marginalization within the context of family dynamics. Dina is a 2021 recipient of the Baker Artist Award, and her films have screened at a variety of national and international venues and film festivals, including the Baltimore Museum of Art. Dina has honed her short films and feature scripts at MacDowell Artist Residency, Dorland Mountain Arts Colony, Stowe Story Labs, Saul Zaentz Innovation Lab and GrrlHaus Cinema Seminar in Berlin. She has an M.F.A. in Directing from Columbia University, and a B.S. in T.V., Radio and Film from Syracuse University. She is a member of Film Fatales, and founder of the Baltimore Women’s Media Alliance, working towards gender parity in the film industry.

Professional Experience

I am an independent screenwriter and director who has also worked for the Hallmark Channel, Court TV, Carbon Productions, Nocturnal Commercials and Films and various freelance projects. I am founder of the Baltimore Women’s Media Alliance and actively involved in national and local organizations such as Film Fatales, MIMC (Mid-Atlantic Independent Media Coalition) and UFVA (University Film & Video Association).

Research

My areas of expertise include studying and making films through a DEIA+ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism) lens and feminist film theory (with a focus on the representation of women in Martin Scorsese films). I work in a variety of formats: short and long form documentary, short and long form narrative, screenwriting and video installation. My work has screened both nationally and internationally and is available on platforms such as Kanopy and Amazon

Teaching

I approach my teaching and service to the university from a DEIA+ perspective as well. There are many ways I foster connection in the classroom, which I have learned from studying feminist, engaged, transformative and critical pedagogies that value inclusivity, critical thinking, empowering students, the democratization of voices, non-hierarchical exchanges of information, holistic learning environments and social engagement. These practices create an academically rigorous, respectful and open-minded space, where students are free to be themselves, take creative risks with ideas and projects, and know they are respected and supported. Some of my committee work includes chairing the IKC (Intercultural Knowledge and Competency) Task Force which spearheaded the inclusion of diversity-related content in our curriculum and serving on the Faculty Council Anti-Racism Committee and NCBI (National Coalition Building Institute).

Highlights

I have participated in multiple residencies, including MacDowell, have attended film labs including Stowe Story Labs and Constellation Incubator, and am a three-time recipient of the Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund. I am a Baker Artist awardee and ‘Filmmaker We Admire” from WIFV (Women in Film and Video).
