The Magic of Math: Stevenson to Host Fall 2023 Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America on October 13 & 14

September 26, 2023 2 PM

Stevenson University’s Department of Mathematics and Physics is excited to announce that Stevenson will host the Fall 2023 meeting of the Maryland-District of Columbia-Virginia section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The event will be held Friday, October 13 in the Rockland Center and Saturday, October 14 in the Manning Academic Center (MAC). A variety of distinguished guest speakers will deliver fun and informative talks on topics in mathematics, including the connection between magic and math and inclusivity in the field of mathematics.

Becky Go ’25, a dual-major in Biomedical Engineering and Applied Scientific Mathematics, previously attended the Spring MAA conference held at Virginia State University.

“I had tons of fun at the spring MAA conference exploring a new campus, meeting my fellow mathematicians, and immersing myself in applications of mathematics that I had not known about before,” Becky said. “I encourage everyone to attend, even if they aren’t specifically studying math or aren’t in a STEM-related field. It’s a great way to learn all about the interesting ways that math is utilized in research and beyond, as well as meet like-minded individuals from beyond our local community.”

Students majoring in Mathematics, Engineering, Education, the sciences, or those who are or are planning to minor or double-major in Mathematics are encouraged to attend. However, the meeting is open to anyone with an interest in math.

“The MAA MD-DC-VA sectional meetings are a wonderful opportunity for math faculty, students, and enthusiasts from the Maryland, DC, and Virgina region to get together for a weekend of interesting and informative math talks,” said Benjamin Wilson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Mathematics. “It is a small enough conference to feel intimate and be inviting, but big enough to include a variety of topics from high level math scholarship to recreational math topics and topics in math education. I highly recommend anyone at Stevenson that is interested in mathematics take advantage of this opportunity to attend the conference when it is right here on our own campus.”
