November 16, 2015 7 AM

Baltimore Ravens Senior Vice President of Public and Community Relations Kevin Byrne will be the keynote speaker at Stevenson University’s eighth annual Shapiro/Rouse Lecture, Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. The lecture, presented by Stevenson’s Business Communication program, will be held in the Rockland Banquet Hall on the University’s Owings Mills Campus, 100 Campus Circle, Owings Mills, MD 21117. The event is free and the community is encouraged to attend.

Byrne, who has been with the Ravens since the team moved to Baltimore in 1996, has worked within the NFL for the past 34 years. During his NFL career, he has started team marketing, TV, and website departments. Byrne has provided media relations assistance at 25 Super Bowls and two Pro Bowls at the NFL’s request. His duties have also included contract negotiations, directing the team’s marketing department and serving on committees to interview and select Ravens head coaches.

Stevenson students, particularly those exploring careers involving community relations and sports media, are eagerly awaiting Byrne’s talk.

“I have attended past Shapiro/Rouse Lectures, but because of Mr. Byrne’s extensive experience in the field of community relations, I am particularly excited about attending this year’s event,” said Emma Ragon, a junior Business Communication major. “I’m really looking forward to hearing about his experiences in the field as well as any stories or advice he has to offer.”

Added senior Connor Skeen, “I am looking to land a career in the sports industry after I graduate this spring, so to be able to hear from Kevin Byrne, someone that has been a leader in this field for a long time, will give me great insight as to what working in sports truly entails.”

Ronald M. Shapiro, Esq., for whom the lecture series is named, is an expert negotiator, sports agent, attorney, bestselling author, and civic leader. Through a generous donation from Shapiro and his wife, Kathryn, in the name of business communication department chair Chip Rouse, this lecture series addresses the interests of business communication faculty and students and the University as a whole.

Stevenson University, known for its distinctive career focus, is the third-largest independent university in Maryland with more than 4,400 students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and adult bachelor’s programs at locations in Stevenson and Owings Mills.
