Personal Hygiene, Self-Care, and Social Distancing Tips 

COVID-19 is a specialized strain of coronavirus, a family of viruses that includes the common cold. As during any active cold and flu season, there are basic hygiene and preventive measures you can take in your daily routine. The CDC recommends the following basic steps. 

Personal hygiene and social distancing 

  • Keep your immunizations up to date, including getting an annual flu shot.  
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. 
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.   
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.  
  • Practice social distancing in your daily routine. Maintaining a personal distance from other of at least 4 to 6 feet helps mitigate the risk of infection. 
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.  
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues, then throw tissues in the trash.  
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces with regular household cleaning sprays or wipes.  
  • Stay home when you are sick.

Self-care tips from the CDC when you are feeling anxious or stressed 

  • Avoid excessive exposure to media coverage of COVID-19. Take care of your body. Practice deep breathing, stretching, and meditation. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep and avoid alcohol and drugs. 
  • Make time to unwind and remind yourself that strong feelings will fade. Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories. It can be upsetting to hear about the crisis and see images repeatedly. Try to do some other activities you enjoy to return to your normal life. 
  • Connect with others. Share your concerns and how you are feeling with a friend or family member. Maintain healthy relationships. 
  • Maintain a sense of hope and positive thinking.
