School of Education graduate, Katie Madigan (Class of 2017), designed, built, and donated two Little Free Libraries to two Baltimore County elementary schools
A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. Katie first saw a Little Free Library at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School on a visit with her Equity in Education class. She decided she wanted to give back to schools by building not one but two free libraries. To raise money to register and build the libraries, she hosted a Panera fundraiser and collected donations from customers.

Katie donated the libraries to Perry Hall Elementary, where she completed her Senior Internship, and Randallstown Elementary. After building the libraries, she collected various children’s’ books from family and friends. Katie delivered the libraries and installed them at each school with the help of her mom, a family friend, and Mr. Ted Fischer, Director of Field Placements. At Perry Hall, a student from one of her classes helped Katie choose a spot for the library and stock the library with books.

Katie hopes both schools enjoy their new libraries and learn to love reading even more!
