Stevenson has a very active athletic program, with 27 NCAA division III sports. Just in the School of the Sciences, more than 15% of students play a sport, and more than a third of the 2017 incoming class was an NCAA recruit! Students athletes are required to maintain a minimum GPA in order to participate in sports and receive mandatory extra help through the Office of Student Success if their GPA starts to slip. Understandably, chemistry and biochemistry majors often have one or more laboratory sessions a week which are extremely important to attend. The department works with athletes’ competition schedule so that students can attend alternate sections of their laboratory or arrange an alternate time to complete laboratory work. In chemistry, we have had students in every athletic program who have succeeded in their course work as well as on the field. Pictured is Morgan McLuskey-Wirtz, a biochemistry senior who is headed to Virginia Commonwealth University school of Pharmacy this fall. Morgan has played golf her entire SU career while maintaining high academic standards. Follow Mustang Athletics gomustangsports.com or on their Facebook page. photo credit: gomustangsports.
