Winter Commencement 2018

On Friday, December 7, the Brown School of Business and Leadership held its Third Annual Student Showcase on the third floor of the business school. The Showcase featured Accounting, Information Systems, Business Administration, and Marketing students’ projects, posters, videos, video games, and internship experiences.

Barbara Rowell, Chair of the Accounting department, stated “The Showcase gives students an opportunity to present their research, project, or internship to other students, the faculty, administrators, and employers and also gives employers an opportunity to see the high level of work our students can produce.”

Dr. Alan Carswell, Chair of the Information Systems department, said the event is “an outstanding example of how Stevenson University extends learning activities beyond the classroom.” Information Systems projects include mobile apps, video games, and social platforms. Art Fifer, Assistant Professor of Information Systems also had a display for mission trips to New Orleans. “Stevenson students, faculty, and staff have been traveling to New Orleans for ten years. Initially our trips were to help the community recover from the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. In these travels we have made many close friends and relationships with organizations, none more important than the friendship and relationship with St. Mary’s Academy. Thirty-two of us provided 65 additional and newer computers, recycled over 500 old dilapidated laptop computers … and repaired the Academy’s servers which had failed over Christmas and made them functional again.” said Fifer.

Dr. Zamira Simkins, Chair of the Business Administration department said “The event is a showcase of our students’ curricular and co-curricular achievements. For example, Annaliese Rutishauser presented about her internship with Northrop Grumman. Annaliese will be joining Northrop Grumman upon her graduation this December.”

Dr. Takisha Toler, faculty lead for Marketing, was excited to share the results of a study conducted by her MKT 307 Market Research class. “My students examined the impact of Alcohol Brand Mentions in Music on the Consumption Patterns of Consumers“. Dr. Toler’s MKT 311- Consumer Behavior class also provided the results of research they conducted and made recommendations for market segmentation expansion for major companies.

Other examples of student projects included:

  • First Year Seminar personal branding presentations
  • Details of social media marketing campaigns by MKT 320 Social Media Marketing students that included content and engagement strategies, advertising, and analytics
  • Interactive games developed in Python by IS 240 Programming Concepts students
  • Inside look at internships with an accounting firm, a technology firm, and an insurance company

The event was well attended by students, faculty, administrators, and guests as you can see from the photos below!
