Congratulations, you made the decision to go back to school and continue your education. It may seem overwhelming at first, but with a few adjustments and techniques, you can set yourself up for success. We talked to our Student Success Coaches who offered their advice on what students can do to make their transition back to school a smooth one.

Utilize Time Management

Students tell us one of the most important elements to success in online classes is discipline. Treat your study time as an appointment with yourself. Plan out a calendar of when you will work on specific assignments for the entire course and get them done ahead of time. Build in space on that calendar, in case something goes awry. Email or talk to your professor if it looks like you might not be able to make a deadline and do it at least 24 hours before the assignment is due.

Talk to your Family and Friends

Sometimes our biggest obstacles to success can be looking right at us. They love you, they want to be with you. However, they may not understand that you need to set aside time to study and prepare for your courses. Plan on about 10-15 hours per week of study time per course per week to succeed. Remember, unless you have worked ahead, you cannot go out on Saturday night if you have a major assignment due Sunday.

Connect with your Professors

During the first week of your course, email your professor and request a telephone appointment. This provides you an opportunity to meet the professor in real time and to get a sense of their expectations for the course. Every student who has taken advantage of this has said it has been invaluable.

Use your Resources

There are numerous resources available for students to help them succeed at Stevenson University Online. Librarians are at the top of the list of those ready and willing to help you find the materials you need for your courses. Additionally, you are encouraged to use SafeAssign before handing in your assignments to check for originality and use Smarthinking if you need help with classwork. Please note, SafeAssign requires at least 24 hours to review your submission and Smarthinking requires 24-48 hours for the tutors to review and return your work. Be sure to allow yourself enough time so you can review the report and revise your submission.
