Exceptional Academic Experiences: Social Emotional Learning and Intentional Teaching
April 4, 2018

Using a flipped classroom approach, university students participated in a series of inquiry-based learning activities where they had an interactive experience, deconstructing the experience in light of Social Emotional Learning intensions and, then, creating Social Emotional Learning objectives based upon their own experiences. Students then applied this same process to a lesson they had recently taught in their field placements. They deconstructed the lesson they taught and then identified Social Emotional Learning intensions embedded in the teaching experiences they provided for public school students. The flipped classroom approach allows the professor to have university students begin learning about the new topic by reviewing a video and reading the assignment before class. The professor can then engage with students and scaffold their learning, while the students apply the concept in class.
