Fighting the flu starts with you. Get vaccinated!

Flu Shots will be provided by Giant Pharmacy. Many insurance plans are accepted or students may opt to be billed directly to their Student account.

Wash your hands.

Handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of the flu. Use soap and warm water and wash your hands often throughout the day, especially after using the restroom or before eating. If you don’t have a sink and soap nearby, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Feel free to stop into the Wellness Center to pick up a free hand sanitizer that will attach right to your keychain or backpack. There are also numerous hand sanitizer stations located in high traffic areas throughout campus buildings.

Clean and cover.

flu virus can live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours, so it is important to disinfect these surfaces often. Use common household cleaners to wipe doorknobs, countertops, and other surfaces—INCLUDING CELL PHONES—to help stop the spread of the virus. Be sure to follow the directions on the disinfectant to ensure maximum effectiveness. Cough and sneeze into your sleeve and wash your hands often. Be careful not to touch your face throughout the day. Many people don’t realize that the average person touches their face 2000-5000 times a day. Being more mindful of this will decrease your risk of transferring germs from surfaces such as doorknobs and desks to yourself.

If you do end up sick STAY HOME FROM CLASS. Rest. Drink fluids. Repeat.

Flu symptoms are severe and start very quickly. They include high fever (typically above 101°), chills, heightened fatigue, body aches, sore throat, and cough. If you feel that you might have the flu, call the Wellness Center at x. 4200 (443-352-4200) for an appointment or visit a local urgent care for evaluation. Contact your professors directly to let them know you are sick. Medicines such as ibuprofen can help to decrease fever and aches. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and do your best to stay away from others. If possible, we recommend you return home for the duration of the illness, usually 7-10 days.
