The non-credit professional development courses in political campaigning are taught by Michael D. Cohen, PhD. Dr. Cohen is CEO of Cohen Research Group, a leading political, public affairs, and corporate research firm. He has worked in political campaigning for 25 years and as a professor for 10 years. He publishes the pioneering and award-winning Congress in Your Pocket suite of mobile apps and teaches non-credit professional development courses at Stevenson University Online on research methods, digital strategy, political campaigns, and public policy. He is the author of Modern Political Campaigns: How Professionalism, Technology, and Speed Have Revolutionized Elections, published in June 2021 by Rowman & Littlefield.

  • Course Offerings

    These non-credit learning classes are offered online in 4-week sessions. You may take any of our Politics and Advocacy professional development classes as individual, stand-alone courses or bundle courses as part of our Political Campaigning Module. Enroll in the following courses to complete the module:

    • Political Campaign Management and Finance 
      This course provides students with the informational toolset necessary to launch a political campaign from organization to fundraising. Students will delve into the intricacies of successful campaigns, exploring topics such as launching a campaign, campaign organization, fundraising through events, and fundraising via online platforms. Political Campaign Management and Finance explores the workings of political campaigns through the lenses of management and finance. Course runs from Mon., Oct. 3 - Fri., Oct. 28.

    • Political Campaign Research 
      This course examines the skills necessary to be able to hire, prioritize, and analyze oppositional, qualitative, and quantitative research from a variety of sources. Students will explore topics such as conducting research into the opposition, utilizing focus groups, implementing polls, and monitoring social media, including ethical considerations, during political campaigns. Course runs from Mon., Nov. 7 - Fri., Dec. 2.

    • Political Campaign Grassroots Organizing
      This course prepares students to engage, deploy, and track supporter activities en route to specific and quantifiable campaign goals and ambitions. Students will explore topics such as organizing, incentivizing, and rewarding volunteers; utilizing phone banking, email, and text messaging; conducting in-person outreach; and mobilizing voter action during the final stages of political campaigns. Political Campaign Grassroots Organization delves into the workings of political campaigns with an emphasis on utilizing volunteers to engage with prospective voters in order to mobilize the campaign and, ultimately, get out the vote (GOTV).  Coming Spring 2023.

    • Political Campaign Media 
      This course provides students with the rudiments of promoting political campaigns through a variety of media outlets. Students will delve into complexities associated with successful campaigns, exploring topics such as leveraging media coverage, utilizing social media, targeting advertising efforts to specific audiences, and reacting to oppositional ploys during political campaigns. Political Campaign Media links the practices of creating, targeting, and deploying ethical and effective earned and paid media messages over the length and breadth of political campaigns.  Coming Spring 2023.
