Employment Classification

One of the following categories classifies University employment status:

Executives

The President of the University and members of the Cabinet.

Administrators

Senior-level employees who are not members of the Cabinet and whose job title includes the word “President” or “Dean”.

Faculty

Employees who hold academic rank, and whose primary appointment is to engage in academic instruction and who are eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council pursuant to the Faculty Council Constitution and Bylaws (see Volume IV – Faculty). Faculty Academic administrators whose job title includes Department Chair or Program Coordinator.

Librarians

Professional librarians may teach and collaborate with fellow faculty members in teaching and conducting research. Professional librarians are exempt employees with faculty status and voting rights in the faculty governance structure.

Staff

Exempt: Employees whose position job duties, responsibilities and salary level qualify for exempt status based on the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Non-exempt: Employees who are hourly are not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay for all hours worked over 40 hours per work week.

Employment Classification

Full-time: Employees in a position scheduled to work nine to 12 months a year, 40 hours per week.

Part-time Regular: Employees in a position scheduled to work more than nine months a year and between 28 and 30 hours per week.

Part-time On-Call: Employees in a position whose work hours are scheduled on an on-call basis only as needed and determined by the immediate supervisor. Work hours are not guaranteed and remain sporadic per workday or per workweek.

Student Employees

Student employees should be limited to 20 work hours or less per week in general during spring and fall semesters, and should only exceed 20 hours in a week during those semesters in rare circumstances. During other periods of the year (i.e., winter and summer breaks), supervisors may approve student schedules of more than 20 hours per week but less than 30 hours per week, provided that sufficient funding is available.
