Creating Community

It’s fitting that Shervonne Cherry ’05 has the job title Community Manager—the word “community” seems to be a common thread in her life.

For one, it’s a top reason she chose to attend then-Villa Julie College. Cherry knew that she wanted to pursue a degree in art or design and VJC was a prospective school. “I had a friend who was a freshman there, so I shadowed her for a day,” she says. “I’d had the image of college from the movies where it showed an auditorium with 200 students in a class. That scared me but then I came here and saw that it was like a community. President Manning was there greeting people, which impressed me. And when I decided to attend, it didn’t disappoint. It was a small community where I could grow, and I could tell people cared about me.”

Fast-forward 11 years later to her position at Spark Baltimore, located at Power Plant Live!. Spark is described as a collaborative co-working space, and its clients are entrepreneurs, creators, and innovators.

“We’re the next step after a company has graduated from an incubator, we’re about the growth,” Cherry says. “It’s expensive, you’re trying to build your brand, find a place—Spark focuses on the scalability of companies trying to grow. A lot of companies come to us—maybe just one person, maybe three or four, and they don’t know where they’re going to be in three years. One company started with one desk, now they’re in an office and soon moving to a suite because of growth. Spark is designed to fit the changing needs of the modern workforce.”

Cherry, who likens Spark’s space to the Google campus, says that her role is establishing and maintaining a community, both inside and outside the space. “If I can see that one company there can meet the needs of the other, I can introduce them. I know every person in the space, so I can see what everyone’s doing. Externally, because I have worked in tech companies in Baltimore, I know the other players and can make the necessary connections there.”

She’s promoting community in yet another way as Vice President of Stevenson’s Alumni Board. “Someone ahead of me gave back to help me as a student, so that’s what I want to do now—contribute time and energy,” she explains. “And I like that Stevenson is the same as when I was there: it still has that community feel.”

There’s no question that Cherry’s appreciation of community will have lasting effects. “I’m trying to contribute back to VJC and to Baltimore,” she says. “And I’m having fun doing it.”

Class Notes

Alumni and friends of Stevenson enjoyed the evening’s entertainment at the Bull & Oyster Roast on March 6. From the photo booth and inflatable tug of war contraption to the live music of Whiskey Train, a good time was had by all.


Mary Jeanne Ebert Buckley became a great-grandmother for the first time in June. She has 12 grandchildren and hopes to have many more great-grandchildren. Mary Jeanne and her husband, Charles, live in Naples, Fla., and she writes that the Florida sun agrees with her but the Baltimore breeze is better.


In Sept. 2015 Carolee Martelle '63 '89 '97 traveled to Southern Africa and one of the places visited was the Chinotimba Government School in Zimbabwe. She brought the children and teachers school supplies and snacks, which are in short supply there, and learned that the school has a computer room and the students receive computer training but only for one hour each week. Back in Sept. 2014 Carolee journeyed to China and was able to travel to Tibet where she visited the Jokhang Temple (dating back to 700 A.D.) in Lhasa. She writes that independent travel to Tibet is not permitted and is only allowed with a special visa as part of an organized or cultural group.


In 1990, Leslie Lehrl Fowler founded a local nonprofit organization, currently called Arts On Stage, Ltd., that presents professional children’s theatre. In July 2015, after 25 years of running the organization, she semi-retired but remains involved by acting as a consultant as well as bookkeeper and Chair of the Board of Directors. Leslie is looking forward to spending more time with her grandchildren and completing some of the items on her wish list.


Lisa Reynolds Allen has joined the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage powered by Zip team that is located in Woodbridge, Va.


In Feb. 2015 Dawn MacKenzie-Stefanik '86 '95 was asked to take part in the American Society of Clinical Oncology Multidisciplinary Cancer Conference in Yangon, Myanmar. She was the only nurse invited to speak along with the physicians at the conference. She was there for 13 days with the first week spent educating and lecturing to staff as well as consulting and making recommendations for practice changes. The last few days were spent sightseeing. Dawn is the Clinical Manager of Infusion Therapy and Infusion Pharmacy at the Cancer Center at GBMC.


After 38 years of public service, Anne Tayloe Hauswald '88 '92 retired from the federal government in December 2014 and writes that “life is wonderful.”


Melanie Covahey Hagan was promoted to Partner at Berman McAleer, Inc., an independent financial advisory and wealth management firm in Timonium, Md. She was also named Director of Client Services, a role that ensures clients receive the service, attention and solutions they demand from the private wealth management firm. Melanie joined the company in 2006 and was a Vice President prior to being promoted. She has more than 24 years in high-level client service positions with financial institutions.


Mike Mandish '92 '93 is a principal at Santos, Postal & Company, a certified public accounting firm located in Rockville, Md. Mike also holds the CSEP designation (certified specialist in estate planning) and the CDFA designation (certified divorce financial analyst).


Maggie Kelly Carroll is working at The Ivy Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel that opened in June 2015 in the Mount Vernon area of Baltimore.


Melinda Myers Hinsley is the President of Hinsley Collective, LLC, a marketing consulting and professional staff development organization established in 2014 and based in Marriottsville, Md. She holds the certified professional services marketer (CPSM) designation.

Irina Koyfman, RN is the Director of Transitional Care at Maxim Healthcare Services where she helped to develop new and innovative transitional care programs for the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in an effort to decrease hospital readmissions. She has 15 years nursing experience and 10 years executive experience, is a certified adult nurse practitioner, and is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Dan Soderberg recently wrote and published a book with his nine-year-old son, Greyson, entitled Elevator Jones: Volume 1 and is working on Volume 2.


Michael Alessi, Jr. was promoted to Vice President and Director of Client Services and Operations at Summit Financial, an independent brokerage firm in Hunt Valley, Md. In this role he provides management support for the firm’s private wealth clients and 401k plans and contributes to the management and facilitation of the company’s organizational strategies, policies, and procedures. As a member of the Summit Financial Investment Committee, Michael plays an integral part in the development and implementation of meeting initiatives. He joined the company in 2004.

Lynn Fagley Diehl is celebrating eight years in business as the owner of Printgraphix, a graphic design and printing company based in Conway, S.C. She was named 2015’s Best Graphic Designer by Grand Strand Happening magazine.

John Dietz is a Digital Video Specialist Supervisor with Maryland Public Television (MPT). In this role within the station’s production services department he is responsible for providing video support for productions, both in-house and on location, acting as the assigned video operator or engineer-in-charge. John also coordinates planning for and installation of new equipment at MPT’s Owings Mills studios. Prior to MPT he was an audio/video communications specialist at the Maryland Stadium Authority. He has also served as a video engineer with Comcast Sports Network and ESPN.


Jaime Hershner Elwood has taken on a new role as the Vice President of Marketing and E-Commerce for Terra’s Kitchen, a healthy meal delivery startup headquartered in Baltimore. The business launched nationwide in March 2016.


Casey Davis has opened Life Transformation 360, a cellular health and wellness company in Westminster, Md. After spending 14 years as a physician assistant handing out thousands of prescriptions, he is focusing his efforts on getting people off of their chronic disease medications and helping them achieve health at the cellular level through real foods and without diet pills, prepackaged powdered meals, or other diet aids.

Jadey Townsend Pareja and her husband Gonzalo welcomed their second child, son Gonzalo Enrique III, on Jan. 10, 2016. He joins big sister Alyssa who will be three years old in June.


Jean Wilson and her husband, Rick, welcomed the arrival of a grandson, Braydon, on July 15, 2015.


Laurie Dudek Berglie is the Marketing Communications Manager for a large staffing company and recently published her first novel, Where the Bluegrass Grows. Laurie describes it as both “equestrian fiction” and “contemporary romance.” Her husband, James '04, is a self-employed photographer and travel agent. He has combined both businesses under the name Be Photography and Be Vacations and now specializes in destination weddings.


Shervonne Cherry became engaged to Elliot Eubanks and they recently purchased their first home together in Maryland. Shervonne is the Community Manager for startup workspace Spark Baltimore. The couple is planning a September 2016 wedding.

Brianne Baccaro Norris was recently promoted to manager at Weyrich, Cronin & Sorra. She has more than 10 years of public accounting experience and has worked extensively on audit and tax engagements. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants and serves as a volunteer for the latter. Brianne joined the firm in 2003 as an intern while studying at Stevenson, was hired full-time in 2005 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and obtained her CPA license in 2008. She is a member of the Harford Chamber of Commerce Young Member Committee, is treasurer of the Harford County Historical Society, and volunteers at various organizations within her community.


Julie Johnson is a Senior Compensation and Benefits Specialist at Gemalto, Inc., a worldwide leader in digital security. As part of the U.S. Human Resource team, Julie counsels employees on various benefit coverage elections, answers insurance related questions and resolves vendor related claims on behalf of employees.

Amy Hollomon Rogers was recently promoted to Digital Project Manager at AOL/ She and her husband, Brian, reside in Baltimore along with their son, Logan Henry, who celebrated his first birthday in January.


Jennifer “Jenny” Goodwin Buchness welcomed a daughter, Brynn, born on March 25, 2015. She joins older brother Colton who was born in June 2013.

Colin May '08M and his wife, Lauren, welcomed the arrival of a son, Connor, in July 2015. The family then moved to Indiana after Colin was promoted to a position with the Justice Department. He recently celebrated five years teaching in the Forensic Studies program at SU.

Nichole “Nikki” Miller welcomed a baby boy, Logan, born Jan. 28, 2016.

Stephanie "Steph" Ritgert Potter welcomed a son, Jase, born in May 2015.


Sarah Sauthoff is working as a physician assistant for LifeBridge Health and was recently recognized by her patients and coworkers as Northwest Hospital’s SuperStar employee. The award is given to employees who show dedication to their position through positive attitude, excellent customer service, and a strong work ethic.


Cassandra Corkell has moved back home to the Eastern Shore to be closer to her mother and sister. She is employed with Hertrich Chevrolet in Denton and is in training to become the organization’s title clerk.

George Dickerson, Jr. married Britnee Hadley on August 8, 2015. He received a master’s degree in information systems technology management in 2013 from The George Washington University and is employed at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

In June 2015 Savannah Elliott received a promotion and then graduated from the Defense Civilian Emerging Leader Program in July 2015. She manages a small team of professionals in her organization within the Department of Defense.

Marie Haughey is the Managing Editor for Wall Street Daily, an online independent publisher of news and opinions regarding global financial markets that reaches more than half a million readers. She has six years of experience in the financial publishing industry. Marie worked her way up from editorial assistant and copy editor and most recently was the copy chief. Nothing was published until it crossed her desk. She is a voracious reader and enjoys researching current events and new innovations to understand how they affect companies and markets.

Tiara Patterson '10M has applied to the University of Baltimore School of Law with the goal of starting classes in fall 2017. She resides in Pikesville with her five-year-old daughter, Kennedy.

Stephanie Sufczynski is engaged to Steven Barsotti and the couple is planning to get married on Oct. 1, 2016.


Jean Goldberg and her husband, Howard, are excited about the arrival of their granddaughter, Samantha Jean, born on Dec. 7, 2015. Proud parents are their daughter, Briana Goldberg Pipitone '04, and her husband, Greg.

Renae Hunter is the Art Director at Plank Industries.

Robert Jackson '12 '14M is a high school science department chair and biology teacher in the Anne Arundel County School System. He also teaches online and online hybrid classes in anatomy and physiology and in forensic science at Harford Community College.

Krystal Sharp graduated from the University of Scranton in May 2015 with a Master of Science degree in Human Resources. She works at Holiday Inn Club Vacations in Orlando, Fla., and in January was promoted from HR Coordinator to Talent Acquisition Specialist-Marketing Call Center.


After graduation Yanita Boayue pursued her passion and joined Kennedy Krieger Institute working with children with autism. After moving closer to D.C., she continued that goal of helping and working with children and is now a therapist at B.A.C.I.C.S. ABA Therapy. She received her certification and became a Registered Behavior Technician and is interested in continuing her education and plans to pursue a master’s degree in clinical and behavioral psychology.

Leah Cornett was married to Brad Nelson on May 13 and the couple relocated to North Carolina. Earlier this year Leah passed the School Psychologist Praxis and, after completing an internship in Falls Church City Public Schools, was licensed as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. She graduated with the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in School Psychology in May.

Tracy Imm '13M was named the Director of Public Affairs with the Maryland Insurance Commission. In this role she will serve as the agency’s point of contact for external and internal communications. Prior to joining the Insurance Administration, Tracy served in communications leadership positions with Erickson Living, Constellation Energy/BGE, Northrop Grumman, Algeco Scotsman, and ITT.

Kristen Lubeski and Daniel Murphy '13 met during their freshman year at Stevenson and have been together ever since. Kristen celebrated her three-year anniversary working for the Hilton Baltimore as a Credit Manager and Danny works as a business teacher in the Baltimore County School System. He is currently enrolled at Goucher College and expects to receive a Master of Education degree in fall 2016.  The couple became engaged at Christmas 2014 and are expecting their first child in June 2016.

Megan Rose married her high school sweetheart, Michael Safko, on April 11, 2015. Susan Youngren, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Biology at SU, caught the bouquet.

Morgan Threat has joined the Maryland Air National Guard as a Network Intelligence Analyst.


Nina Brown received the RN OB certification in October and is now a certified obstetrical nurse teaching at Prince George’s Community College.

In Nov. 2015 Morgan Buckingham took on a new role as the Marketing Coordinator for Federal Realty Investment Trust. Her primary responsibility is promoting retail tenants and the property at The Avenue at White Marsh through social media and public events. Morgan writes that this has been an extremely rewarding experience.

Layla Thompson married Kyle Koch on Oct. 10, 2015 in a small ceremony surrounded by family and close friends. The couple honeymooned in the Bahamas. She works as a Digital Designer at University of Maryland Baltimore County and is studying for a Master of Fine Arts degree in Integrated Design at the University of Baltimore. Layla writes that her education and experience at Stevenson greatly prepared her for her current position.


Jessica Barley is working at Brightview Senior Living in Towson. She completed an internship at Brightview while a student at SU. She is also a student and graduate assistant in the applied gerontology master’s program at Towson University. Jessica writes that she went through four interviews for the position and felt totally prepared because of her business communication courses at SU.

Kayleigh Guzek was selected to participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 14th annual “So You Want to Be a Coach” program held in April in conjunction with the WBCA Convention in Indianapolis. The objectives of the program are to increase understanding of skills necessary to secure coaching positions in women’s basketball as well as increase awareness of competencies necessary for success in coaching. Kayleigh is working on a master’s degree in business and technology management with a focus on leadership and serves as a graduate assistant in SU’s sports information office.

Nicolette Stoner is working as the Foundation and Community Relations Coordinator for the Philadelphia Union, a Major League Soccer team.

Charlie Taylor is working at Employer Assurance Solutions in the Marriottsville, Md., office where he interned while a student. He is taking the life and health insurance exam to become an independent agent.

Kerri Wojciechowski is working in the Comprehensive Transplant Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital where she cares for patients who receive liver, kidney, pancreas, hand, and face transplants. She has been at Hopkins since 2012. In her spare time Kerri is a travel agent with Pixie Mouse Travel specializing in Disney destinations.

Nichole Young is working as a Laboratory Assistant in the DNA section of the Prince George’s County Crime Lab.

Ted Herget Way dedication

How do you recognize decades of invaluable service? At Stevenson University, we renamed the main road on our Owings Mills North campus from Gundry Lane to Ted Herget Way, in honor of Charles E. “Ted” Herget, Jr. On April 14, a ceremony was held in the new Academic Center to dedicate the road’s new name.

Herget served for 30 years on Stevenson’s Board of Trustees and is a former Board Chair. During that time, he was instrumental in the transformation of Villa Julie College into the University we know today. As a distinguished business and community leader, Herget introduced numerous individuals of prominence and influence to Stevenson, increasing our reputation and viability. He continues to serve as a member of the President’s Advisory Council.

Inspiration and appreciation were felt in abundance at Stevenson University’s 2nd Annual Scholarship Luncheon on April 17. This event brings together the alumni, individuals, corporations, and organizations that fund annual and endowed scholarships with the deserving students who benefit from their generosity. This opportunity to reach beyond the thank-you letters and photographs led to lively and earnest conversation in which benefactors and students gave inspiration to each other.

Board Member James T. Brady voiced the sentiments of many in attendance when he remarked that of the numerous events held at Stevenson, the Scholarship Luncheon is among his favorites due to the overall feeling of celebration and goodwill. Brady, along with his wife Fran, established the James T. and Francine G. Brady Scholarship, and they were delighted to have this chance to spend time with their student.

Another featured speaker, Beverly Bareham ’01, sponsor of the Beverly Bareham, CPA, PA Annual Scholarship, revealed that she keeps the photo of her scholarship recipient displayed in her office as a source of inspiration and reminder of the good that comes from giving back.

The event concluded with donors and students celebrating the experience by having their photos taken together.

Investing in Students, Building Careers

We cultivate many resources to grow the scholarship support vital to our students’ ability to pursue a Stevenson degree. Partnerships with area businesses are key to providing this support. Two such partnerships were recently established that provide not only scholarship funding but also valuable employment opportunities for our students.

Agora Invests in Digital Marketing Students

Agora, Inc., recently welcomed 19 students from the digital marketing program to their offices in mid-town Baltimore to learn about the publishing company and its new scholarship opportunity.

Following lunch and remarks from Brian York, Managing Director of Agora Integrated Marketing, students took part in informal interviews with Agora associates, toured two of Agora’s buildings in the Mount Vernon complex, and met with other Agora staff to learn about the transition from college to career.

Students also learned about Agora’s new scholarship, the Bill Bonner Scholarship for Rising Leaders in Digital Marketing. Named after Agora’s founder and president, this scholarship will benefit a freshman or sophomore who is pursuing a degree in digital marketing. The student receiving the scholarship will also participate in a summer internship at one of Agora’s companies.

Samuelson Foundation and LifeBridge Health Invest in Nursing Students

With the purpose of investing in students who show great promise for long and successful nursing careers, the Herman and Walter Samuelson Foundation has partnered with LifeBridge Health to offer scholarships of $12,000 to junior and senior students in Stevenson’s nursing program. As part of the competitive application process, candidates will participate in interviews with representatives from LifeBridge Health. The Herman and Walter Samuelson Foundation Scholarship for Nursing also provides a two-year employment commitment at Sinai Hospital or Northwest Hospital.

Challenge Accepted

In the four months since STANDforStevenson was launched, an incredible energy has been building around supporting Stevenson students. With the help of a growing group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, our students are benefiting from the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends.

A particularly positive response was felt during our first Bunting Challenge Week in March. Volunteers and friends took to email, social media, and their phones to encourage fellow alumni to support the University, at any level possible, to help us add 50 alumni donors. We exceeded the goal with 53 donors and unlocked part of a challenge gift from Board Member Marc Bunting ’91 to support scholarships.

Our second Bunting Challenge Week at the end of April once again showed the University and our students both how much our alumni value their Stevenson experience and how much they want those who are following in their footsteps to value theirs. We again exceeded the goal with 71 donors, unlocking another $5,000 in scholarship funding from Bunting. Keep an eye out for our third and final challenge week of the fiscal year and help us unlock the final portion of Bunting’s gift.
