Ricky Sanchez '98 (left) announced the inaugural recipient of the Mustang Gala Alumni Award and presented the award to his friend, former teammate, and fellow Dick Watts Athletics Hall of Fame member, Trey Shackleford '96 '02 (right).
On Sunday, April 30, Stevenson families, friends, alumni, coaches, University leaders, and staff gathered in the Owings Mills gymnasium to acknowledge the tremendous accomplishments of our student-athletes.
The Mustang Gala: Presenting the “StevieU” Awards was the first of its kind. Following 23 years of athletic banquets, the gala afforded student-athletes the opportunity to celebrate their seasons in style as they traveled down the green carpet in their “black tie optional” attire, stopping along the way to be interviewed. The gym was completely transformed – glowing with green and white lights, and filled with festive décor creating an authentic awards show atmosphere.
Alumni athletes and past winners of various awards acknowledged the 2016-2017 honorees and invited them to the stage. Mustang pride filled the air as each past winner presented the award (that he or she had once received) to a current student athlete. There was a true sense of fellowship as current and future Stevenson alumni shared a rewarding and humbling experience.
Women's basketball senior, Sara Tarbert, received the Female Athlete of the Year Award. Presenting the award was women's soccer alumna and 2015 winner, Allie Ondrejcak '15.

Women's basketball alumna, Ty Bender '15 (right), presented the Fighting Heart Award to senior women's lacrosse player, Brady Heher (left). Heher was diagnosed with thyroid cancer during her time as a student-athlete. She went through treatment, underwent surgery, and spent months in recovery -- all while maintaining an optimistic outlook and rehabbing to get back out on the field.
Meg Gill '15 (left), women's lacrosse alumna, presented senior golfer, Emily Haas (center), with the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The athletes were joined on stage by head women's lacrosse coach, Kathy Railey (right).
