Frequently Asked Questions - TEAS
Stevenson University’s Nursing Department requires successful completion of the TEAS exam as one of the admission requirements. Your score on the TEAS will be considered as one factor in the selection process. If you do not take the TEAS exam, your application will not be evaluated for admission.
IMPORTANT: Effective August 31, 2016 the TEAS V is no longer available. All students now take the latest version of the TEAS exam called ATI TEAS.
Q. What is the TEAS test?
A. The test is called the Test of Essential Academic Skills. It is a test of basic academic knowledge in the areas of reading, mathematics, science, English and language usage. The exam is designed to provide an assessment of a student’s overall academic preparedness for nursing related content.
Q. Who should register for the TEAS test?
A. All transfer applicants who are applying for direct entry into the clinical undergraduate nursing program including second bachelor’s degree students should register for the TEAS exam.
Q. How do I register for the TEAS test?
A. You must first create an ATI account by going to the ATI website. Click on create an account and follow the prompts. You will register for the TEAS with PSI and follow the specific instructions. Please call ATI directly at 800-667-7531 with any questions about registration.
Q. Where do I take the exam?
A. There are multiple test sites in Maryland. You will select a test location when you register for the exam. Directions are provided.
Q. When should I take the TEAS test?
A. The official TEAS transcript must be received by Stevenson University by the February 15 nursing application deadline. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that you take the exam no later than January 30.
Q. What is the fee for the TEAS?
A. The fee is determined by ATI and the testing location. It is paid upon registration for the test.
Q. How can I prepare for the TEAS?
A. ATI offers a study manual and two practice assessments at www.atitesting.com. We strongly encourage preparation for the exam.
Q. How many times can I take the exam?
A. You may take the TEAS exam twice. Attempts exceeding two will not be considered for admission. You are required to pay for the exam each time you take the test. The Nursing Department will use the scores associated with the highest Adjusted Individual Score.
Q. How long are TEAS scores valid?
A. TEAS test scores are valid for twenty-four (24) months after the exam is taken.
Q. What is a passing score?
A. The ATI TEAS exam is not a pass or fail test. Students must earn a Proficient or higher in the ATI Academic Preparedness Category to be competitive for admission.
Q. Are there testing accommodations for students with disabilities?
A. All PSI test centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and every reasonable accommodation will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. If you need ADA accommodations, you must contact PSI prior to testing. You must fill out and submit a candidate information bulletin form located on PSI’s website prior to scheduling a date.
