Stevenson Film & Moving Image (FMI) students - from left to right, above, are Dakota Madanat, Ben Rossen, Travis Francis, Olivia Jonas, Greg St. Clair, Emily Kennard, T.J. Slade, Dan Whitehead, D.J. Carmon, Patrick Howard and Nate Schrader - have traveled to Austin, Texas, to attend the annual SXSW Festival. We arrived on Saturday, March 12, and will head back to Baltimore on Saturday, March 19. During the week, students will attend film and episodic TV series screenings, keynote events, panels and workshops. There is also a trade show featuring the latest digital technologies. This trip is part of a "special topics" course offered by the FMI Department, entitled "The Evolution of Film Festivals."

While the students are enjoying themselves and learning as much as they can about the current state of the film industry, their two accompanying professors - Dina Fiasconaro and Christopher Llewellyn Reed (yours truly) - will also be attending as many events as possible. In addition, I am covering the festival as a film critic for three different publications: Hammer to NailBmoreart and The Baltimore Sun's "Roughly Speaking" podcast. Be sure to click on the text I just hyperlinked to see my evolving coverage, which will include film reviews, filmmaker interviews and festival overviews.
