CURRENT COURSE II:

STAGING SEX, GENDER, AND SEXUALITY

Hey everybody! Marc Kohlman here, bringing you the latest in what’s new with the Stevenson University English Department.

Last time I told you all about one of the many cool courses that are being taught this semester. Today, I’m giving you the scoop on another one that is definitely worth highlighting. This is Dr. Laura Syder’s ENG 281: Staging Sex, Gender, & Sexuality. If you are intrigued by how stereotypes about gender and sexuality affect our everyday lives, you would certainly find much to appreciate and learn from in this course.

When I followed up with Dr. Snyder in an interview on why she wanted to teach this subject, she told me how “fascinated” she is “by the archaic, outmoded stereotypes that persist in all of our subconscious perceptions of others.” This class is all about learning to look beyond what you hear and see in stereotypical media representations in order to get a clearer picture.

Dr. Snyder also told me that her students have been able to “apply what they’ve learned to their own lives, but they also share their new insights with their family and friends” which is exactly the kind of amazing experience Stevenson English students often get. For example, Dr. Snyder mentioned that one of her students found herself explaining what she gained from the class to her grandmother. Despite the distance in age and the edgy course material, the grandmother kept saying, “I get this! I get what you’re doing!” As you can see, there is something for everyone to learn in this class.

For the English Department, I’m Marc Kohlman. Special thanks to Dr. Laura Snyder for her time. See ya soon!
