BACHELOR OF ARTS
In the English program at Stevenson, students can combine interests in literary analysis, creative writing, professional writing, and digital publishing, and apply these starting from the beginning of freshman year. You can build an individualized program based on your personal and professional aspirations, drawing from an array of courses in literature, creative writing, professional writing, publishing, and digital studies.
The hallmark of the Stevenson English program is a topics-based curriculum that combines classic literary works with popular texts and underrepresented voices. Students can take courses in poetry, fiction, and prose, You can study writers from Shakespeare to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie with faculty who are published authors and nationally recognized scholars. Special topic courses such as Sci-Fi at the Theater, American Horror Story, and Madmen and American Masculinity offer challenging and diverse content that draws connections and invites students to think critically about canons and culture alike.
Creative and professional writing courses such as Style and Editing, Writing Videogames and Interactive Stories, and Intro to Digital Publishing develop the creative and digital skills that make writers versatile and attractive in today’s digital market. Departmental events, including our Visiting Writer Series, career forums, and off-campus excursions provide hands-on learning and bring students into contact with successful professionals in their fields.
Graduates of the English Language and Literature program will:

- Write academic, professional, and/or creative texts.

Do you need to share your creative vision? Stevenson’s English program lets you express your voice and gain career-ready skills through courses in digital publishing, gaming, and interactive narrative, and by serving on the staff of our digital literary magazine, The Greenspring Review, or The Villager, the digital campus newspaper.

Minors
The minor in English requires successful completion of a minimum of six courses and 18 credits with an ENG prefix at the 200-level or above. Courses ineligible for the English minor are ENG 150, ENG 151, ENG 152, and ENG 153.
Please note: ENG 160 Introduction to Literary Studies can be taken as one of the courses to fulfill a minor in English.
Students minoring in English are eligible to take courses restricted to the English major if the prerequisites are met. Please see an academic advisor for more information. General guidelines regarding minors may be found in the Minors section of the catalog.

The Greenspring Review is entering Fall 2021 with an expanded staff and lots of new programming, including contests, events, and a new podcast.The magazine’s new Editor-in-Chief Josie Hunter announced a much-expanded staff,.

In Summer 2021, Stevenson English moved into its new home in Garrison Hall South on the Owings Mills Campus. We miss Greenspring, but we are thrilled to be back on campus, back to in-person classes, and we are loving being lo.

Over the weekend, 33 Stevenson students, alumni, SU siblings, and friends collaborated online to create seven new, playable games as part of Global Game Jam 2021. The games debuted Sunday, January 31 at the virtual game showc.
