Dive into the World of Literature and Write your Story

BACHELOR OF ARTS

Apply your interests in literary analysis, creative and professional writing, and digital publishing starting from the beginning of your freshman year. At Stevenson, you can build an individualized program based on your personal and professional aspirations, drawing from an array of courses in literature, creative writing, professional writing, publishing, and digital studies.

The hallmark of the Stevenson English program is a topics-based curriculum that combines classic literary works with popular texts and underrepresented voices. Take courses in poetry, fiction, and prose. Additionally, study writers from Shakespeare to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie with faculty who are published authors and nationally recognized scholars.

Creative and professional writing courses such as Style and Editing, Writing Videogames and Interactive Stories, and Intro to Digital Publishing develop the creative and digital skills that make writers versatile and attractive in today’s digital market. Departmental events, including our Visiting Writer Series, career forums, and off-campus excursions provide hands-on learning and bring students into contact with successful professionals in their fields.

Want to go the extra mile? Our Bachelor’s to Master’s Option allows you to graduate with a master’s in as little as five years.

Graduates of the English Language and Literature program will:

  • Solve problems by thinking creatively and critically.
  • Read and interpret texts using critical theory and language arts.
  • Use research resources.
  • Write academic, professional, and/or creative texts.
  • Communicate orally and nonverbally.
  • Negotiate personal values in relation to the values of others.
  • Apply academic preparation to professional and cultural experiences beyond the classroom.
  • Make informed academic and career choices based on self-determined goals.
