Five senior interns in the School of Education presented a session at the Maryland Universal Design for Learning conference on October 24, 2014, entitled, “How Can UDL Support Maryland College- and Career-Ready Standards and Develop Higher-Level Thinking Skills in Middle School English/Language Arts and Social Studies Classrooms?” David W. Nicholson, Professor of Education, sponsored the group. In their junior year, these five interns designed Unit Plans in the course, Methods for Teaching Middle School English/Language Arts. Samantha Atwell, Kristen Gregory, Sean Kelley, Breanna Ongley, and Stephanie Turley selected learning activities and assessments from one lesson in each Unit Plan, identified the challenges learners may encounter, and proposed Universal Design for Learning solutions to address the learning challenges, support Maryland College- and Career-Ready Standards, and develop higher-level thinking skills.
