Education graduate, Mabelle Hurtado (Class of ‘12), presented on diverse children’s literature in the Methods for Teaching Elementary English/Language Arts and Social Studies course on April 17. Mabelle has been a teacher in Carroll County Public Schools and conducts story time for the Baltimore County Public Library. She brought a wide variety of diverse children’s books to share with the class, and read aloud Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match/Marisol McDonald no combina, a bilingual book written by Monica Brown and illustrated by Sara Palacios.
The teacher candidates were then encouraged to select two books from the vast assortment, describe the themes and features of each book, and explain how the books could be used in the Elementary classroom. The participants were fully engaged and enthusiastically responded to our guest presenter, inviting her to return for an additional session in the fall.
