Chemistry and Biochemistry News

This weekend, the School of the Sciences welcomed several alumni back to the Greenspring Campus for Future Stevenson Scholars’ Day.  Christopher Griffin (Chem ’15) assisted Dr. Mason with the Fingerprinting Workshop for prospective students interested in Forensic Science; Brittany Bryant (Chem ’13) and Mandi Sheroke (Chem ’14) met with parents of prospective students; and Julia Barker (Chem ’10) and Michelle Serafin (Chem ’10) talked with prospective students about the Department of Chemistry at Stevenson.

Thank you to all our alumni that helped make Future Stevenson Scholars’ Day a huge success!

For her Capstone internship, biochemistry senior, Fya Powell, shadowed an anesthesiologist on the neurosurgery unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  She observed lots of surgeries and learned so much about medicine.  She will certainly use all this knowledge in her future career in the health professions.  Fya presented her intership poster at the School of the Sciences Poster Session in December.

Chemistry faculty member, Dr. George Lauterbach, spent part of his winter break in Mexico.  He was able to find and photograph this beautiful bird, a squirrel cuckcoo.  This large and long-tailed cuckoo grows to 16-20 inches and weighs about 4 oz.

Due to winter storm Jonas with its record breaking snowfall, the start of the semester has been delayed by three days! NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) shared some background on the science behind snowflakes. Read the full story.

A week before the start of each semester, faculty gather to discuss plans for the new semester.  This January, a new approach to our upper level integrative labs was discussed, upcoming award winners were chosen, and new ways to help freshmen and sophomore students be more successful in their coursework were brainstormed.  Everyone is excited to start the Spring 2016 semester!
